Tax refund for overpaid taxes after stop signing for JSA

I know tax is normally refunded at the end of the tax year, however i finished my job on the 23rd december and really need it now, i have signed onto job seekers allowance, and they have my p45 form, 2 parts of it that you would normally send to HMRC to get a refund, it says on the jobcentre website that when you sign off job seekers allowance they will pay you your tax refund, but it doesn't say when. I am due for my first signing on tuesday and wondered if anyone knew how fast i would get my tax refnd if i signed off. Thank you!

they will pay you it around May after the end of the tax year. I don't think you can get this years tax back as you may get a job next week and have more earnings so they will not be able to calculate any overpayment until they know what your earnings are for the complete tax year

If you stop work and stop claiming JSA you can claim your tax back at any time, you do not have to wait until the new tax year. You just have to wait until you are out of work for 4 weeks. I did it last year. It seems doubtful that after signing off JSA, the job centre would wait three months to pay me the tax refund, it is more likely if that much time passes i would get a cheque from HMRC.

On the HMRC website it states "If you're getting Jobseeker's Allowance, the Benefit Office will normally pay any refund you're entitled to after the end of the tax year. If you stop claiming Jobseeker's Allowance before the end of the tax year, the Benefit Office will pay any refund you're entitled to after you've stopped claiming"

I am in the same position as the OP and my understanding is that if I remain out of work I will have to wait until the end of the tax year for any refund. I presume that if I do start working before the end of this tax year that the overpayment will be credited to me through an amended tax code, but would be interested to know if anyone has experience of this.

Interesting, I take it you have to request this some time, my husband was signing on from July last year and did not get any refund until he applied himself to the tax office after receiving all the end of year notifications.
So they pro-rata the refund or assume you will receive JSA (taxable) for the remainder of the year
  • I got a tax rebate in December 2011 for the tax year 2005 - 2006 when i stopped working so I guess they can pay it anytime.

the info and form you need is on this website

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/stop-work-refund.htm

Ive used this form when I was a student working part of the tax year, at a time when I knew I wouldnt be working for the next 4 weeks. I sent it off myself, dont see the point in waiting til the end of the tax year, as you dont need to.

However, the rules for if you were on JSA are also explained on there as I think theyre slightly different.

As soon as you sign off if a tax refund is due it will be paid at the same time as your last payment of JSA (its paid by the DWP through arrangements with HMRC If you don't sign off it will be actioned some time after the new tax year, probably around mid May.

YES! I thought that might be the case, but i'm so used to things being slow. Thank you very much sammyjammy!!, i will go ahead and sign off JSA on tuesday then.
  • LSDisFun - can you tell me if you have received your tax rebate after signing off? I am in the same predicament and wondering whether or not I will get a rebate when I sign off??
