If you can't do it with First Direct how come I've just managed to setup a payment for in nearly a years time?

I think that as a general rule, if Nationwide can do it then anyone can do it.

Nationwide have never allowed weekly standing orders. I complained to them about this 15 or 20 years ago. First Direct, on the other hand, were only too glad to help me. They allow any frequency you want.

On the other hand, with Nationwide you can make payments or pay bills through their cash machines, which I have found very useful sometimes. You have to set them up in advance, i.e. over the internet, but you can pay whatever amount you like whenever you are passing the ATM. Halifax also used to allow you to do this, but I think they have withdrawn the service since their accounts were moved over to LloydsTSB's computer systems.

Did it accept when you clicked continue?

If so, that's not bad at all. I may be ditching Nationwide totally, as this is really the only reason i use them now.

Other than i'm currently using them to do a fake switch (D/D, S/O) to gain a £100 switching bonus.

  • I have had mortgage/credit card/loan acct with NW for many years and never had any problems. In December decided maybe life would be easier to have all accts with them so requested to transfer my current acct from HSBC to NW.

4 weeks on transfer is still not complete in the process they have sent out debit cards but pin numbers didn't arrive for another 2 weeks. They then said they'd made a mistake and made acct opening date to be Dec 2012 not 2011. Pin numbers arrived so we changed them to the numbers we wanted. 3 days later NW reset my pin number back to original and cash machine swallowed my card.

Today been told they've accidently cancelled my mortgage payment and cannot set it up again unless I go into the branch. And to top it off the 2 Standing orders which I have with HSBC which have been paid 4 weekly for approx 10 years can not be transferred as they don't have the option to pay 4 weekly. "Can we just set these up as 5 weekly?" Answer - NO !!!
I'm furious think I'll be cancelling whole thing tomorrow and staying with HSBC who I've been with for 20 years and never had a problem !!!

You are doing the right thing, HSBC are streets ahead of the Nationwide. The worlds local bank versus the world's local circus. The Nationwide's inability to perform weekly and four weekly standing orders is nothing short of disgrace.
