Tips on mounting a satnav on a car dash please

Anyone got any tips on mounting a satnav on a car dash. We have just bought one of the larger ones for our "new" car. The sticky pad supplied for the stand does not seem to stick, nor the replacement pad we bought. Any tips?

You can get beanbag mounts for Garmin's too, or at least you could last time I owned a Garmin (2003)

They work fine unless you really chuck the car into a corner, which you shouldn't be doing on a public road (I was on a track).
  • Did you clean the polish off the dashboard first?
  • On my last three cars (Astra G, Mondeo Mk3 and Mondeo Mk4) I've made up a mount by removing one of the central air vents from the dashboard and fastening the mount to the vent grill using small plastic ties and then refitting the vent into the dashboard.

This provides an excellent satnav mount which is very steady and easily viewed. The cable is threaded in the usual manner.

  • I've got one of these (£16.50 from Amazon), and I've used it in 5 or 6 different cars and it's never once slid off.

  • You can get mounts that clip onto the air vents.

That's the exact one I had in 2003. Nice to see they haven't changed a design that actually works!

If anything, since the modern models are likely lighter than my old one, which was about the size of a brick and not much lighter, it'll probably work even better.

How does the beanbag adhere to the dash?

We have a bean bag mount and it doesn't stick to the dash (so no sticky mark). It has a rubbery base so it's quite grippy, and it's fairly heavy. It never moves around. Also means you can chuck in the glove box when stopped so no sign that you have a sat nav.
