Infinity: now you have it, now you don't ??

The London exchange where I live was FTTC enabled nearly a year ago. Showed up as available at 29 mb download, 2 upload about last March. Green BT FTTC box at the end of the road, monthly calls from BT with offers to switch (didn't). I even had a email late last year from Plusnet asking if I wanted their FTTC.

So we thought we'd see what the prices were doing on FTTC only to find that our line/exchange is now down to be enabled for FTTC on 25 Jan 2012. Eh?!!!!

Has anyone else "had" BT Infinity and then not? Can anyone shed any light on what may have happened? I am not going to waste my time asking BT what's going on :wall:
Needless to say we aren't going to sign up just yet for a phantom FTTC service

  • The availability checker is not noted for its accuracy.

That said, this *can* be the result of an initial check by postcode, which says yes, followed later by a check using the actual phone number. Which then says no. Because one postcode can be served by more than one cabinet and not all are enabled.

If it's not that - the problem is that if the checker is wrong, that's the killer for ordering it since all ISPs use that as their guide. You could contact your ISP of choice, have them check, and place the order, or hassle BT to get the checker updated correctly.

thanks Mark, I always entered the phone no when checking and the FTTC green cabinet has been there a while now. I think BT Infinity sales called me twice a week last summer too, to tell me it was possible and would be the greatest thing since sliced bread etc.
Weirder still - I think one of my neighbours has it (this is London and we don't talk to each other, just nod on the stairs :D)

You had your chance last March but now that cabinet is fully subscribed and needs more equipment adding before any new connections can be made.

It may be that if there are not enough customers actually waiting for FTTC in that locality, the Jan 25 date may even be put back and other cabinets get upgraded before that one, where there is sufficient demand for this service.

As Mark has said but try this.
Put your phone number in here, wait a minute and see what pops up. If superfast shows its FTTC.
