Can my 12 year son deposit money into my account by himself?

Hi all.
My son wants to spend some birthday money of his via paypal. My bank account is the only one set up with paypal. I have told him he can go to the bank (with my debit card) and deposit his cash into my account and then return home and use my paypal to pay for the things he wants.

However, its just dawned on me that normally to deposit cash these days, you have to enter your PIN in the chip and PIN devices at the bank.

Will the bank allow him to do this alone, if i give him the PIN number?

Oh wow, a very very long winded way of asking a question, sorry:D...but at least it dawned on me before i sent him out in the rain to do it :rotfl:!

  • He just needs a paying in slip with your bank account details on.

With my RBS account, anyone can go in and ask to deposit x amount into this account (supply number). No card or pin is needed.

As said, he can pay it in over the counter using one of the paying in slips, no need for the card or pin.

(Is it bad that there isn't a cat in hell's chance of me giving my son my pin?)

My bank has paying in slips available in the branch to use, don't think I've ever used a paying in book. You just need to write the account number, name, etc. in as it's obviously not pre-printed on them for you.

    How old is your son?
I am only allowing him because its his birthday and we have had a VERY heated discussion about using MY paypal to pay for things online! I dont think hhe'd DARE do it again
  • Just write the sort code and account number on a piece of paper, they can do it from that. It's not like taking money out of an account, banks will let you pay money to anyone! No need for PINs/cards etc.

Mine has been collecting dust for years. :D

The teller will write or print a slip out, it's really not a problem.

Thanks everyone. To save the hassle, i have just decided to allow him to use my money thats already in there, then pay me back with his money. Saves all the hassle!

I wondered about this too, so asked in the bank. You can pay in without the pin or the card. Or even with just the card. I have told the bank that if anyone wants to pay money into my bank they have my express permission to do so :D

So either arming him with card or account details would do :)
