Sky Cancellation Nightmare

I am trying to cancel my sky tv to make cut backs in my budget. I have been with them for 10 years,

So when I call to cancel I am politely told that I am still under contract.

I took an offer a few months ago for 20% off for 6 months but was told I could cancel at any time and at no point was a new 12 contract discussed.

I would never took another 12 month contract on even if it had been mentioned.

Whats my next step ?

I am going to contact trading standards and see if solicitor can do anything.

I have also emailed the CEO.

This lot get more like Setanta every day

A discount deal normally hooks you in for another 12m, otherwise they would have no incentive to offer it. The problem will be proving that they confirmed that there was no lock in.

But they never told me anything about a new 12 month contract and I never signed anything. It was the overseas call centre I dealt with for the offer

Tell them you are going to put in a subject access request for the recorded phone call. Costs £1.

Ask them to review to call to see what was verbally agreed. If you’re not happy put in the request and get a copy of the call.

You don't need to sign anything-a verbal contract has exactly the same validity in law.
The problem, as ever, will be proving what was said.

Do you have trouble reading posts mate.

Let me repeat. At no point was a 12 month contract discussed when the offer was made

I read it perfectly well thank you. Did you specifically ask them whether this offer triggered an extension to your minimum term contract? If you did, and they said no, then you have a mis-selling case, but not an easy one to prove.
If you didn't, then the terms may apply. They are not required to read you all the terms-it's up to you to check what the terms are.
People frequently post on here that they weren't aware of the minimum terms, but that doesn't mean that they don't apply.

  • I received a super discount offer from Sky a couple of years ago - almost too good to be true, in fact; 1 month later I rang them to query why all of the discount had not been applied only to be told that the original offer never existed and a rogue worker (on commission to re-activate accounts) had just lied to achieve my custom; after many phone calls I received an apology and a goodwill credit to my account but at no point would Sky admit that a recording of the original conversation even existed so I wish you good luck with proving what was said during your conversation with them. All of these companies only offer discounts to tie you into their product, imho.

I got 6 months half price, I was told no tie in also.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

All sorted now. The call centre got it wrong. Sky escalations confirmed no 12 month contract.

They actually managed to persuade me to stay another 6 months
  • Glad you got sorted. Gave my notice on 21/12/11 and was contacted today and given a 50% discount for 12 months plus a new HD box for my multi room. The guy on the phone stressed several times that the call WAS recorded and that I was NOT tied to any contract with this deal. Very pleased!
