Hi, Please could somebody offer help with the following.

My DVD drive will not recognise any disks. It just makes a noise but does not read/write cd's or DVD's

My computer is Toshiba U400-13r
Disk Drive is: GSA-U10N Slimline IDE

I have tried replacement drives but they just do the same thing.

My computer will not run any microsoft fix-it programs, it just say cannot continue because an error occured.

I did try and follow these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
but have now accidentally deleted the whole registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
and not just the 'upper and lower filters' that i should have :(

PLEASE, PLEASE dont say re-install windows

Is there any other way to get the DVD drive working again please, and replace the deleted registery key (if needed)

Thanks for any help

  • reinstalling the driver should put the registry key back in.
i think you can do it using regedit.exe also (windows program) - select folder, then edit --> insert --> new key.

but think reinstall driver is first/best step - this may help: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletin.jsp?ct=SB&soid=445782&ref=EV

    Thanks for your help,

I have re-instaled the driver (which has replaced the registry key), although i think there should be more inside the key?

Unfortunately i still have the same problem, no disks are recognised

Image below is of the registry key and contents:

Also i have noticed on the device manager there is a gold coloured 'cog' and a question mark beside the dvd drive??? (see image below)

You could use device manager to uninstall the CD Rom drive, then restart the machine so it finds new hardware and installs the driver

A possibility is windows and or your anti virus etc have disabled autoplay for security reasons, if you look at post six here, is the autoplay value 0 If yes, make a back up of the registry, then change the autoplay value to 1

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3725367

If it is not that, there is a link in the same post for looking at autoplay errors.

    Thank you for your help

I have already tried uninstalling the cd drive from the device manager, which did re-install itself once windows was re-started.

I have looked at the registry key (pic below) and it looks like the auto play is alredy set to '1'.

Thanks again for the assistance though

Im not sure how to do this, please explain?
  • must've imagined it - you can troubleshoot device in 'devices and printers' but that wont help here...

did you retry deleting the UpperFilters from within the registry?

Have you really went to the bother of changing the drive? What caused the problem originally?

If you really do not want to reinstall Windows (which seems odd as you've changed the drive and been messing around with Regedit) then have you considered an external USB drive like http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005N2UE2O/

And your drive refuses to recognise all discs (CD data, DVD data, DVD video, CD PC instal programs etc)? Is your OS Vista or Vista Business? In Computer/My Computer which letter is your drive and how does it appear (ie does it show the full name/manufacturer?). Which channel is it on? You can find out exact details like that by using SIW http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11159784/cdn/oc/siw-setup.exe

In Device Manager I would delete all channels that are part of the drive (and the drive) and Windows will simply reinstall those on restart.

Have a look at this page too http://winhlp.com/node/10

If you have really swapped the drive over then it could be a hardware fault within the machine (loose ribbon cable etc).

    Thanks Jemma,

Changing the drive was the easy bit, literally 4 screws and it slides out.

I think i may have to take your advise and look at the external drives now :o

Have you tried a different IDE/SATA cable from the motherboard?

Another IDE/SATA port on the motherboard?
