But the OP was sold the cable to use with a specific phone. As it isn't fit for the purpose for which it was sold, the OP is entitled to a refund -- particularly since a refund was guaranteed by the shop assistant if the cable didn't work.
Obviously it's not worth going to too much effort/expense for the price of a cable and it's your word against theirs, but I would sent CPW head office a recorded delivery letter insisting that they issue a refund or you will sue them in the county court. As I said, taking them to court might not be an effective use of time/money, but I'd still threaten them. If everyone complained when a company breaks the law like this, then hopefully that company would realise that it's cheaper to behave legitimately.0
