High calorie cat food?

  • Royal Canin 12+ is supposed to be good - specifically designed for thin elderly cats. It's a dry food but the pieces have tasty mousse inside.
  • Neither have mentioned liver function tests as being clear, FF. And it's very easy to 'suspect' thyroid without actually checking LFTs, especially when there's so much weight loss that the liver could be affected.

And I'm not really making that much sense at the moment, I have to admit.

Of course, if they're healthy, then it is good to add offal, but if there's liver issues, it's forbidden. As is oily fish. And prawns, I think, due to excessive vitamins that can be hepatotoxic along with additional cholesterol.

Anyway, I'm going to burble away somewhere else for fear of tripping over my own mouth :) I'm a bit of a gibbering wreck at the moment.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Keep burbling here, you generally talk a lot of sense and your views are well respected. Sorry to hear you are a gibbering wreck, hope the cause resolves itself soon.

We had a look today in the supermarket and found the following.

Felix be good to yourself mature - 13% protein
Hi life and simply fayre - 12% protein
    Felix kitten - 15% kitten

 This made me chuckle lol.

This has been interesting reading. My old man is approximately 14 now (rescue whose lived with me for 11 years so not 100% sure on his age) and only weighs 4.2k (in comparison to our fat Charlie who weighs 6.8k of muscle!!!). He's been checked for thyroid & kidney problems and so far the vet is at a loss and said just to monitor him. He does have FHS as well but don't think this is linked. He eats anything put in front of him, just doesn't gain. I might try him on kitten food and see if that makes any difference.

After 4 years of heartache, 3 rounds of IVF and 1 loss :A - we are finally expecting our miracle Ki11en - May 2014 :j

And a VERY surprise miracle in March 2017!
  • As another poster has mentioned Hills AD is high calorie and palatable and useful for short term weight gain.

In senior pets I would advise a renal diet, even if renal values are fine. They are designed with a better quality protein base to reduce pressure on liver and kidneys and are palatable and also designed to increase weight gain.

There are a variety on offer and several flavours so usually one can be found to satisfy. My own very picky cat now has Purina NF tinned and dry and has never eaten so much!

It may also be worth trying different styles of food. Small biscuits can be easier to eat for gummy cats! Pate may be easier than chunks.
