Fitted quite a lot of these . Not much scope for planing if your door frame requires taking some material off the door. Otherwise they are ok for the price.

that goes for any of the cheap hollow flush panel doors.
there isnt much real wood in there to play with.
and make sure you fit the hinges on the correct edge.
    Get some gorm.

Quite often you get what you pay for and in the case of doors its less knots equals better doors, with pressed doors its the insides that you cant see that make them cheap and nasty, tbh theres not a lot in it at that price range.

My guess is that most cheap panel doors come from the same factory, as they do all look very similar. The original doors in my house were flat hardboard with cardboard interiors and pine edges, and the main problem after 40 years of use was the hardboard coming away from the frame at the top and bottom, and grotty paint jobs.

You can't complain too much if your cheap doors have lasted 40 years!

I'd be pleased if a £25 to £30 door lasted half that.....A quarter and it would be doing good. Unfortunately they very rarely do.

You need to ask Howdens for a bigger discount. We just bought the 4 panel shaker doors for a bit less than the Wickes bulk price. It should be as easy for you as showing them the Wickes brochure and asking them to beat it.

The Howdens doors are a bit heavier though.

How much do you want to spend ? basically a fire door will be of solid core construction and will be 30 or 60 min fire rated you are paying for the external finish ie wood veneer or primed hardboard.

What goes wrong with them? As far as I can see, the new doors are almost exactly the same construction as the old ones. The only damage on the old ones was at the top and bottom, where in places the hardboard had come away from the wooden slat frame. Oh, and the vile paint job, decades of bodgy drippy paint.

For me the big advantage of these panel doors is that they are light. I also had a solid pine and glass hall door to hang, and I could not have done that on my own due to the weight.
