TV Licence - abolished?

Not as far fetched as you might think. The current industrial action (and collection centre closures) aimed at Crapita the outsourcig company, may find itself making even more cuts if certan MP's get their way.
The 'Broadcasting (Television Licence Fee Abolition) Bill 2010-1 has its Second Reading at Westminster today - you might want to kook out for the debate if you have access to the BBC Parliament Channel.

Woopedoo, a massive saving of £146 per year and a whole raft of rubbish programs plus yukky adverts, I rarely watch TV but don't mind the licencse fee tbh.0

I do hope this fails - there would not be enough advertising available to support all the standard channels if the BBC had to find money elsewhere.
Also a brilliant way to put loads more folk on the dole.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0 -

I agree and would rather pay the licence and keep the BBC channels free of ads.0 -
I think it is long odds against this bill getting the Royal Assent(not many Private Members Bills do get through). It is not a matter of adverts vs TV licence.
It could be funded by, say, 1p on income tax.
This would remove the need for Capita to be the agents, to check for evasion and to have a large building in Bristol devoted to maintaining the record. Not sure what those who spend their lives denying Capita access would do for a pastime though.0 -

No chance, it is an option and a luxury, the same as car tax, you want it you buy it.
Cant see people happily working hard to pay yet more tax so those not paying tax can receive free TV.0 -

I didn't say I thought it would happen merely that it was possible. I think so many households have TV that it is not a luxury. If adopted(and I am not holding my breath) then the significant collection and detection charges would be avoided. People pay tax when they don't directly benefit e.g. paying for education when they have no children. I can see your argument against but this would be a more cost efficient way of doing things albeit it would spoil the fun of some who post on here of the evils of Capita, the Government and the BBC but they would probably survive to moan about something else.0 -
Of course the easiest thing to do would be scarmble all BBC signals and let those who want to watch BBC pay £145 a year for a decoder, those who don't pay, don't watch. Simples.....but the BBC and and it's fans know that will never happen. Most people will simply say bye bye BBC. I've just cancelled as most it's mostly garbage. Now I await the bully boy tactics from the BBC bully boys as they don't like people who cancel. At least I can watch tv this morning (DVD only) knowing I'm not paying for crap like The One Show, Flog The Antiques Car Boot Sale, or a Place in the DIY SOS Country Great Masterchef Bakeoff Bikers etc.
In fact if they come after me, I'm going to insist the BBC compensates ME! I have to pay extra on my groceries, petrol and clothes to cover advertising costs, yet the BBC says I can no longer watch those ads or the commercial programmes they pay for.....so I WANT MY MONEY BACK BBC.:j0 -
Nothing to do with the BBC saying you cannot watch adverts on ITV. It was the government who decreed that it was a 'Broadcast Receving Licence' so if it is broadcast, you need a licence - the fact the BBC is funded from it is immaterial to the requirement.0
