Which seems to be the death knell for lots of UK companies. I seem to recall lots of UK firms expanding overseas, only to lose massive amounts of money and end up scaling right back again to the UK. It's certainly no guarantee of success or growth.

We have a very insular view of our major companies. Tesco's profits in Asia grew 30% last year (2010/11).

All that's been reported by retailers is sales figures. What will be more relevant is actual bottom line profit figures.

With Tesco think you have nailed the timescale on the head.

I still like tesco as a business and think they do well to have everything under one roof. I wouldn't go anywhere else if I needed to shop AND needed some homewares at the same time. I just find doing the food shopping there a chore now. I actually look quite forward to popping to sainsburys and trying something new and a bit unique. I love chicken, and often buy the chicken breasts with coatings or extras, the fresh ones. Tesco have 2 varities in stock normally. Piri piri and Bacon and Cheese. Sainsburys have about 10 varities, and Asda must have a good 15. Just don't generally like anything else about Asda.

Even as a shareholder however, I got sick of them attaching their name to other companies. Tesco Gold, Tesco Tyres, Tesco Cars, Tesco Electric, Tesco Compare, Tesco Flowers, Tesco DVD rental, Tesco Travel, Tesco Property. Often run by other companies with tesco as the affiliate. All gets too much.

I detest pretty much everything about Tesco and shop at Sainsbugs myself. However, there is something seriously wrong with your taste buds if you prefer Sainsbugs fresh cooked chicken. It tastes absolutely horrid and is like chewing on rubber. Tesco is probably supermarket king for !!!!!! quality products but their fresh cooked chicken is at least edible and not too bad tasting when you're starving.

You're right about Sains having a much better choice though. I also enjoy trying different stuff and have a few favourites :

* Sains cheese and pepper muffins (I could live on these things, mmmmmm)
* Sains extra special mayo (better than helmann's imho)
* Sains brand mature cheese is pretty decent for own brand cheese
* Higgidy pies, esp the beef, stilton and ale

Doesnt mean those that occupy the bilges can afford to go there though does it?

I love waitrose. I would prefer to pay another 5-10% for groceries for better quality and actually be asked politely if I could move out of the way in the isles, as opposed to being barged to one side by some tatoo'ed chav mum!

I was there last week, firstly the quality is not better and secondly most of the (identical) products that I usually get elsewhere were 25 - 50% more. One item that particularly stood out was 79% more, identical brand and size, I didn't buy it, I bought it from Farmfoods - I bet you wouldn't be seen in there . Choosing to spend that much more just because you are afraid of people with less money than you is foolish.

I have nothing to say to this prejudiced comment but I wonder if you are as envious of your social superiors as you are disdainful of those whom you perceive to be lesser?
