Cost of cat pts

Sadly I have to take my cat to the vet for pts...he has been ill for a little while but not actually seeming to suffer. Realistically I have just been putting off the inevitable for my sake and I really should be thinking of what is best for him (difficult when of my two cats he has always been the super strong fit one so was kind of convinced he would get better :( )
I'm just wondering if anyone knows what kind of bill I can expect - I remember it was quite a lot when my dog was pts last year but can't remember if that bill included other treatments he had first...
:(
Valuable life advice: never play chicken with a lion...the lion will ALWAYS win!

  • Awww, I'm so sorry.

    :(

We had to send our little Tabatha to Rainbow Bridge last March but I'm afraid I can't remember how much it cost us. I did pay to have her cremated and returned to us in a beautiful little box and I know the TOTAL cost was about £100, but how much of that was for the pts I really couldn't say.

Sorry, not a helpful reply, but I really just wanted to pass on my condolences, and huggles for your poorly cat.
Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt. So it goes.

I think it's around £30-40 but will vary on area.

That should include the consultation fee aswell.
  • So sorry to hear about your poor cat. It's a very hard decision but it's the kindest thing to do.

I paid 192.00 for pts which included the vet coming out to my home and cremation with return of the ashes. This was in October last year and I thought it was quite reasonable. It varies of course with different vets and areas (I'm in Surrey).

Wishing you well at this very sad time.
  • mine charged about £70 but about £45 of that was for a home visit.

    sorry about your pet

We were charged £65 when one of ours got run over in November.

If you can pay in advance, I know we weren't registered with the vet we took him to, we've moved but still took them to our old vet for annual check ups but this surgery was nearer on the day, cos I was a complete wreck waiting to pay. I've seen distressed owners in our normal surgery and wish at times like that they should show a bit of compassion, ok they're a business not a charity but in most cases they've made a small fortune out of pet owners during the animal's life and if you're a responsible owner you'd go back and pay a couple of days later.

    Hugs for you and kitty
  • We are really expensive, £84 for cat PTS the crem charges on top! Private crem £150 plus...
    NOT a NEWBIE!

    Was Greenmoneysaver. . .
  • I'm sorry to say this and OP I really do feel for you but ..... does it really matter what it costs?

Costs for vet treatment vary hugely around the country for any kind of treatment - it will cost what it does and, if it needs to be done, it must be - however much that is.

  • The best thing to do is to telephone your vet and ask them. You don't have to book in at the same time if your cat isn't suffering and still has a good quality of life. Just make sure you do what's right for him when the time comes. There's no "right" time for us but there is for them. Try and arrange it with a vet that you/ he knows if you can.

Also check what is included as I'm sad to say some vets put a HUGE mark up on both communal cremation and individual cremation services that they sell through the weekly company that also normally collects their clinical waste etc. If you want him looked after you are best taking him home after he is PTS and either burying him at home or finding your local APPCC.org.uk member (Association of Private Pet Cemeteries & Crematoria - sorry, I can't do links yet!) and asking them what options they offer. At least you'll know you will get a genuine service for him if you want one.

Out of interest I have seen a couple of price lists offered to the vets by their weekly company - the vets are encouraged to make approx £85 profit on arranging the individual cremation! Personally, the way I work is that the price is the same regardless of whether you come through my door or via the vets as we base ourselves on the personal and respectful service we offer rather than offering ridiculous cost prices to encouraging profiteering when you are at your most vunerable (sorry, I will get down from my soap box now!).

    I hope this helps.

Around the same and around the same time too - as I called the vet to come to the house and opted for individua; creamation - keeping my ginger boy Tiger in a little casket at home where he belongs :(

My beautiful cat Gloria was sadly PTS earlier this week.
Cost £29. That was for the consult and the injection.
I brought her home to bury her in the garden.
