BT may also have been victims of a rogue salesman, but there distinct lack of controls over the ordering process, allowed this to happen.
Alternative Dispute Resolution Service (CISAS and the Ombudsman Services) have the power to award compensation and, in one case I know of, awarded £4,000 to someone whose phone number was published in the phone book when that person requested to be ex-directory.
I have had to spend many hours getting this problem resolved; I am also incurring my time and expense in ensuring that my identity is not used to open up other goods and services in my name.0 -
You should have asked for £1000 imho leaving room for them to haggle you down to the £500 you want !0

If this matter came to Court I would probably only look for compensatory damages - I think £500 is a fair reflection of that. I would agree that maybe punitive damages might also be relevant, simply for the deterrent value.
My only course of action is really against BT and not the rogue salesperson in India - you can imagine the logistical difficulties in issuing him a summons!
For these reasons, I will simply refuse to deal with anyone in any overseas call centre in the future.0 -
I just made a call to BT about this saga (I got through to a call centre in India) They offered to call me back; they could see what number I was calling from, even though my number was 'withheld' and I was not even calling from a BT line!
The ramifications of that are pretty obvious, if a rogue worker decided to 'slam' your line! He could do so without even asking for your phone number!
It also means that the rogue worker who ordered phone service in my name, probably also knows my non-BT phone number!0 -
You do realise that most call equipment call centres use can see your number regardless if you withold it!
How do I claim my £1000 compensation for reading the dribble on this thread?0 -

With your obvious knowledge of telecommunications equipment and services, I am sure you could make valuable input on this forum, even though I can find no posts in your name so far, that demonstrate your technical expertise. As for my boyfriend, He did not say the word baliff to the baliff
I am sure you must feel very relieved at that.0 -
