Please be gentle with me as I'm not an expert on broadband at all!!!

I am looking to possibly change from BT to Plusnet for our broadband (price reasons) but retaining BT for our phone service. I'm sure I have read that our BT Home Hub 2 can be used with Plusnet to give us our wireless connectivity - has anyone else managed this at all?

A second question is that whilst with BT Broadband, I have been able to connect our non-wireless printer (Epson SX110) to the Home Hub USB port and am then able to print from any of our PCs/Laptops without having to physically connect with a USB cable. Would we still have this capability if we moved to Plusnet? If not and we ordered the Plusnet supplied wireless router, could we connect our printer to it to get the same result?

Many thanks.

If you are able to use the HH with Plusnet then your printer setup will remain unchanged. Whether the Plusnet router would also offer this feature depends on what router they use.

The challenge will be in whether you can access the HH admin panel to change the login details to those required by Plusnet. (I don't know the answer to this).

Please note: Plusnet effectively resell BT services, and they are actually owned by BT. :)

    Ian,

Thanks for the quick response. I know I can access the HH Admin Panel for my BT login details, but not sure if it would work with Plusnet. Apparently the wireless router than Plusnet use is a Thomson 585 which has 4 ethernet ports but no USB, so I suspect that I would need to invest in a new wireless printer.

    is it HH1 or HH2 ??

I am sure they can be unlocked , I did a HH1 at one point so a friend could go wireless on another ISP

The BT Home Hub 2 type A and B variants will work on PlusNet. I've read the HomeHub 3 models also work and accept the @plusdsl.net usernames.

I've used a 2A on Plusnet a few years ago.

A more recent case with detailed instructions on how to use a type 2A hub.

Make sure you perform a full factory reset of the HomeHub, otherwise, you may have problems connecting to Plusnet.

fwiw, some customers experience wifi problems with the TG585v8. I read PlusNet are field testing a new TG582N which is likely to be introduced later this year.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Fingers crossed if BT can't do as good a deal, I can fall back on Plusnet.
  • Hi,

Does anyone know if the BT home hub 4.0 will work using plusnet?

How would I go about changing settings so it would work?

    Thanks

    Hi Berkshireclaret,

Yes, the Home Hub 4 works fine out of the box - you just need to log in to its interface and change the login details to your Plusnet username and password and it should work fine. I believe that's true for both ADSL and Fibre connections.

    Hope that helps,

  • Hi

I am also thinking of switching from BT to PlusNet but I really would like to keep my router BT Homehub Version 2.0 ( I am a technophobe and nothing I ever install goes smoothly)

Is it possible to do this ?

    Hi there,

Yep as above it should be fine, just do a full factory reset on it then put your Plusnet login details into the router and it should connect you to us :)
