Is it illegal to give up your right of way?

Well the alternative is for the driver to sit there without flashing - which means you take a chance that when you turn they haven't seen you and suddenly pull forward, or for no-one to leave gaps by junctions and to drive as uncurteously as possible.Bowling_4_Gold wrote: »It kind of puts you under pressure to move when someone is flashing at you, therefore you may neglect the basic safety checks... not an excuse though!
Personally I will continue to flash headlights and let drivers who are too stupid to do proper observations lose their NCBs.0 -
This business of ceding your right of way annoys me sometimes.
I witnessed an accident 2 years ago, when suv, who was following a cyclist at the time and unable to overtake due to lack of space, flashed on oncoming car who, being night time and possibly slightly blinded by the flash, completely missed seeing the cyclist and turned straight into him.
The thoughtless actions of the driver trying to be "nice", resulted in some poor chap ending up in hospital with several broken bones.
It's your right of way, take it; that way the rules are clear and all confusion is avoided.0 -
That first one has happened to me at least once, saved by my airzound I'm sure. When in my car I never flash anyone out when there's a cycle lane beside me. I've also almost run over some idiot (in my car) when coming up a bus lane like that one. He thought 'its a bus lane, I can't see a bus, therefore its safe to cross' but he didn't realise it wasn't a bus lane at that specific time.Bowling_4_Gold wrote: »Can be quite a dangerous habit:

And I've seen the aftermath of a car turning left across a bus lane, when there was a bus coming up it!
No prizes for guessing which road in Manchester all these things happened on!0 -
I've had this a couple of times and I always find it results in me selecting a more relaxed speed, and a "the more the merrier - after you Sir!" attitude to letting people out at junctions.I often find a good 5 second blast on the horn reminds the idiot that they are other people on the road attempting to get somewhere today.0 -

Eye Contact!
If I can't make progress and want to let someone out, I look towards them and when they are looking in my direction, nod or wave.
If I'm struggling to get out, I look towards the drivers eyes to see if they have noticed me. A flash might be for someone else that I haven't seen (turning in when I'm turning out f'r'example).
So if you want to turn out, or change lanes in front of me - indicate and look towards me; then I'll know what you want to do and help if I can do so without inconveniencing anyone else.I need to think of something new here...0 -

No it's not illegal - but if it then was a factor in causing an accident, it could be something that could be part of the evidence of some other offence (e.g. careless driving)
On whose part? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Oh, oh.... What about the numpties that let people out on the approach to traffic lights? They let someone out and then charge across the lights on amber, leaving you sat there swearing at a set of red lights “I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
