  • Hi everyone. My DMP is proceeding and the debt is coming down which is a great feeling. Now only 2 years from being debt free!!

Although I have no intention of going back to my old ways, I suddenly find I need a credit card. My daughter will be studying in Spain from September, and I will be going over with her to settle her in (and give her the benefit of my luggage allowance!!) My plan was to fly to Madrid and hire a car to the final destination. However without a credit card I understand that it's really difficult to hire a car. I have enquired about a pre-paid card, and although the company said I could use it for car hire they wouldn't recommend it as I would have a big chunk of the pre-payment blocked for 21 days. Has anyone else been in this position - i.e. needing to hire a car, and if so how did you get round it?
(I am considering getting a card for poor credit - to start rebuilding and only use it for this, although of course it may not have enough of a credit limit to be of any benefit!)

    Thanks PP

You won't be allowed to take more credit as you will be breaking the terms of your DMP agreement. Certainly in England you can use a debit card, but you'll need 250-500 quid deposit handy in your account!

as IanMark says above, this is against the rules of your DMP. However, is it not possible to pre hire your car through the Internet, thus not needing a credit card once you get there? I am only suggesting this, it is not something I have ever needed to do. Alternatively, if the car options fails, the rail network is excellent in Spain, would this be a possibility?

BlushingRose - How have you found DMP? I don't know why I'm unsure about it, I have been researching a bit into it today but still have not made my mind up?

Has it reduced your re-payments significantly each month?

    Hi Sammy,

Well we're still very new to it (only started in Jan this year) and so we're still getting used to the budget, but we pay CCCS a certain amount then they give agreed amounts to the creditors, we don;t have to deal with that side of things any more.
Our LBM: Dec 2011. DMP started: Jan 2012. Debt at LBM: £41,568

    Oct 2012 = Current debt: £40,548.93
    Oct 2013 = Current debt: £39.054.70

As the others have said, I don;t think you're allowed to do this - but if it were me, I'd ring your DMP people and ask them about it and see what they say about it.

Thankyou all for your input regarding the calls. I think ill just have to do as you say SAAC and keep my cccs ref number close to the phone and bite the bullet and answer.

I have a quick question, dont shoot me down or anything but we have a caravan. shes a lovely caravan and has given us many holidays and memories over the past 2 years since we bought her. This year though, we cant afford to go away so i am considering selling her. shes worth around £5k-£7k obviously the sensible thing would be to sell and clear some of the debt but it wont even pay half of what i owe (which makes me feel really angry at how bad ive let it get!) so i was wondering if we sold the caravan would i be able to keep the money we make from her in a savings account and use this as our "emergency fund" seeing as though i havent budgeted anything more than £5 per month for this on my CCCS debt remedy (because i dont have anymore than that at the moment)

Or will CCCS make me put it towards clearing my debt?

If you have the money through selling the caravan, you can do a number of things:

    1) Spend it! Though not advised! The danger (certainly with me) with money is that you could fritter it away. So either...
    2) Put it in a savings account or Bond/ISA.
    3) Put it towards your DMP, where they will distribute it fairly between creditors.
    4) Possibly offer F&Fs to a couple of small creditors - there is a risk in doing this, as other creditors may see it as showing preference to other creditors.
    5) Go on holiday...

The best bits about 3 & 4 is you're shortening the DMP length, but if you did it, then make sure that creditors know it's a one-off offer.

    6) Keep it for holidays, or rent it out for this year. :)

    Good options there Ian

I'd be inclined to rent it out and have hols there. That way no hols to budget for and the rental will pay for spends.

    Hi Everone,
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice..
We have been on our DMP with Payplan for just over 2 years.

I received a call from them yesterday and they asked if we would like to go on an IVA.

Has this happened to any of you peeps and if so what did you do?

Also my annual review is on Friday and I think our payments will have to go down to Payplan by £50 per month.....Is this likely to upset our creditors?

Confused at the moment all help greatly appreciated,

    Thanks

They've offered me an IVA a couple of times, and tbh is a way of them making money...

    See here about IVAs...
