Thanks for the "HashTab " program, TakeThis. I have winMd5Sum, but as I didn't know what the hash for this file was, I couldn't check it!

Both the SHA1 and the Md5 hashes check out, so I'm nowhere nearer solving this. Could something have happened to the file when I downloaded it, or did I use the wrong type of blank DVD... I used a Verbatim DVD-R? I haven't had any problem with these blank DVDs before, and don't want to use up all my DVDs to just get the same result.

Do you think downloading it again might resolve the issue? Or, might burning it with another program do the trick?

    TIA

Does ImgBurn not have a 'simulation' mode? Choose 'Burn Image to Disc' and perhaps a slower speed. When everything appears ok, you can go back to 'Write' mode.
  • Yep " The option "Test Mode" enables the simulation mode, i.e. no actual data will be burned on the disc

Belt & braces would be the "Verification Mode" during / after the actual burn

Yesterday I downloaded the latest version, as recommended by TakeThis, as although I've made a couple of copies of the Windows 7 recovery discs that the laptop (mine's an Acer 5741-A) nags/prompted me to do when I bought it, I thought it would still be a good idea to have another extra copy ( minus the carpware that it came with!), from elsewhere....just in case the ones I've made fail, and I need to reinstall Windows. It downloaded OK, and then I burned it using ImgBurn, but during verification, I received an error message that the file was corrupt (sorry can't remember exactly what the error message said) and couldn't be fixed. Is this just me, or is it the file itself, 'cos I don't want to waste any more DVDs if it's the file itself? Or, am I doing something wrong? I'd appreciate any help/advice. TIA.

Interesting that you received the message during verification and not during the burning phase.

Perhaps you can make an image from the newly created disc and check the hash of it.... or use the Windows 7 image burner.

You can download any version and use the ei.cfg removal facility to create a universal version - see here

    SUCCESS...yeh!!!!

I did the Test Mode thing....never used it before, as I'd never had any problems before...check! Then burned and verifyied...success!!

Funny, 'cos I used the same type of disc, and did what I always have. But computers seem to have a mind of their own...what works/doesn't work one day does the opposite the next...go figure!!

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys...especially TakeThis!

Some time ago santer posted a useful site for downloading Win 7 OS

    http://techpp.com/2009/11/11/download-windows-7-iso-official-direct-download-links/

However Microsoft has now "dedacted" the option so no longer available on that site.

What a bu**er as I have all versions bar the 32 bit version of Home Premium which I now need to repair a corrupted installation (have the license).

Anyone know where I van get a copy quickly?

    Thanks

The installation disc I have has all versions on. If you don't enter a product key you're asked which one you want to install. If you enter a product key it installs the correct version for that key.
