I think what SBOG is doing is fantastic and I wish he lived near me, I'd certainly take him on. I can't get anyone to do odd jobs for love nor money.

Don't suppose you live in Devon SBOG?

Okay i'd like to defend myself regarding my posts which i have written on this thread.

I have never said anything bad about SBOG doing odd jobs, i actually applauded him, wished him good luck and future success. Even kept my fingers crossed that the weather improved so he could help his roofing friend. NEVER said he was stealing jobs in anyway shape or form. Never said he was dodging tax or being dodgy and claiming benefits. Its shocking that he CANT. I know been in the same position he's in not that long ago and its rubbish.

BUT i posted about insurances etc and offered advice regarding abestos for very good reasons.

    a) my friend got poisioned by asbestos after the people he worked for saidd it was safe kind
    b) he then got in a lot of trouble and fined for the work he did
    c) he then had to pay compensation to the people who he was removing the asbestos for.

Not a good situation at all to be in and is still paying the debt off now.

I actually mentioned insurance etc just in case in the future, fingers crossed, he gets some really good work. We are self employed and my partner is a fully qualified, insured domestic gas safe engineer in the construstion industry. So yes i think i am enitled to post on the thread and say to people who think SBOG got a good thing going here i'm going to do the same thing, when they don't have a clue what they doing.

SBOG actually has experience of working in different area's so he can do the work in a very competent and professional manner. Based on what he has said, if he was in my local area i would most defintely draft him for various jobs and pay him much more than he's getting now for a single job.

Now i know i'm getting defensive but i'm quite upset by posters who seem to think that anyone who mentions insurance should wind they neck in. Or seems to think that all professional tradesman are rip off merchants when a lot of us are just scraping by in a very tough time. Which is why a tradesman i know get people like SBOG in do certain things, like digging ditches, doing a bit brick work, as its makes financial sense to get someone esle in who can do a good job, such as SBOG's roofer mate. Also its helps other people out as kind of support network.

Accept my apologies if it upsets anyone, but quite frankly i had to reply. Best of luck again SBOG
  • I'm with you on that!

Reading the whole thread it goes from calling sbog a thief to worrying about tax, then after those are put to bed it moves to licenses and putting others out of a job.

None of the various accusations stand at all , it's worth noting as a long time browser of this whole forum that those thanking posts accusing sbog of this and that elsewhere make a big fuss about benefit claimants getting a raw deal. Seems hypocritical to bellyache for others on one hand then condemn a man who takes nothing (yet I feel he is entitled to the at least the most basic unemployment benefit) from the social pot and seeks to *actively* enrich the community around him.

Thanks for that Morethan, I think everyone needs to take a step back here, I'm surprised how het up people have got over what I do to be honest. No one is losing out , no one is being ripped off everyone wins as far as I can see. Of course in reality the only real loser is myself who like this week has worked long hours from before 7am most days to well after sundown and when the money comes in it will have to cover all the days when I got nothing.

lets all just sit back and relax a bit eh?
  • This week I was held back by the weather but helped by it in a way, I had a call from a couple who wanted logs for their fire as it had been cold last week and they expected it to be colder, their neighbours too wanted logs but also a lean to like I had built for them to keep the logs outside.

Now I was hoping to start on a roofing job with my mate the roofer but the weather last sunday was snow and he felt it would be hopless to start before wed or thurs. I approached my friend the farmer and talked round the idea of taking down the dead tree he had in one of his fields now instead of in the late srping when the ground would be drier. OK he said but don't take the car in the field (it would have sunk) and he was too busy with top dressing the fields to get the trailer out so I was on my own out there. No problem so I thought but it was a bigger job that I though and took ages to cart he logs to the car in the lane. Plus they were all wet , I needed to get them home , cut quartered and staked to dry off by the end of the week.

Typical it cleared by Monday evening and my mate wanted to start the roof on Tuesday late morning , so I was cutting logs and stacking all night then back to the farm by 7am to finish off. In my eagerness I suggest on early mon to the farmer I swept out the stable yard where he hires out stabling to horse riders - the various people are meant to keep it clean but don't and I've swept it before - I was getting the wood for free but now I was time poor. I got it all ways and was at the roofer for 11. I wanted the laths for kindling and all in all there were two car loads in the end.

I needed to get all this done by the end of the week so I was starting at 7 am after walking the dog to get all this wood cut and quartered. I was glad of the straw twine I collected sweeping the yard to tie up the kindling.

I had fortunately collected enough timer off cuts - like decking and fence posts to build a nice lean to with a tile top for the logs , they look nice and rustic.

Recently the waterways board cleared the brush and undergrowth along the canal banks by here and as the new spring growth is there all the rubbish is there to see - on thursday and friday when walking the dog early morning I collected a couple of bin bags full of aluminium cans , which when crushed made a bag full.

I was glad to get the firewood sorted , I had all but run out and now there is enough for anyone that needs it and my own use , it'll keep for next winter . Surprisingly I sell a fair bit in the summer for use in those chimera things .

I have some labouring to do this next week and I have noticed a skip being delivered later sat afternoon to a local factory along with building materials. I shall pop out there early tomorrow and ask about it.
  • Now this is just superb , this is the kind of thing we need to inject BACK into local communities. Everyone waits for the council or some one else to do it. This is why councils have grown huge and unwieldy with massive budgets but don't seem to be able to get things done at the very small level.

A tiny local community of a few people have come together and made their environment better, no one has been done out of a job I doubt ANY gardening company would touch this as it's not a garden, no builder would do it , plus if they did does anyone here really believe they'd charge £40? The thing is SBOG didn't even ask for a figure they whipped round for it. I don't know the area or the circumstances of the people but was that all they could whip round?

But thats not the point at all - the one key thing to remember is that SBOG pays his NI stamp and thats the key. From what I can gather here reading all through, I can't see him making enough to pay any tax on a self certificated form he fills in. Now if he was on 30K and drove a big car and lived in a big house then questions might be asked but I can't see the tax man finding much here to be honest.

This kind of small scale local community working is what we need more of in this country - the system is broken and it's not going to better itself on it's own.

I agree entirely, and since reading Sbog's posts I have looked at waste ground and bits by canals and railways and seen the rubbish etc . I wonder about the bits behind peoples gardens you see on the train etc. It's obvious the council or other bodies aren't going to do it so we all get to look at litter & waste everywhere.

    Good for Sbog I say.

I'm glad you got sorted , I was concerned when I saw the snow last week and rain. Of course typically the weather is much nicer this week and it feels like spring. I'm hoping you can get more to do and it won't be so wet and miserable out there for you.

I did see your post about time management but I still shiver to think of you out and about before 7am in this weather , that said it's the best way to get the most done.

    Keep warm!

I think you need to take a step back as has been suggested, I see no one attacking you. I do hope that all those that mooch around these forums having a go have been and gone from this thread now. It's one of the few that lift my day !

This is a brilliant thread and I hope people are taking inspiration from it! :T

It's very refreshing to read, please keep the posts coming SBOG and if you DO live in Devon, let me know because I've got no end of odd jobs that need doing.

  • SBOG, I just wanted to add to this thread. I have read the negative comments you have received and it compelled me to post. You've also had some very positive comments. I'm with the positive ones. I think what you are doing is fantastic. Inspiring. You help people, you make a bit of dough. You are a great opportunist and most of all, you come here and share your exploits with us. I find reading about your days, highly interesting and always look forward to reading the next installment.

In fact, I sometimes wonder what you are up to today.

How I love the way you go out and help an elderly person to shift something useless to them, and end up polishing it up and selling it on. I think there ought to be more people like you out there.

Well done and keep up the good work! And thank you so very much for sharing your day with us! I and i'm sure many others really appreciate it. There must be many who read this thread and smile... but today, I felt I had to let you know.

I like reading them too , I always browse this site and stuff like this makes my day. I wonder if I could do it then reading the example of cutting wood at 7am in the snow I think not!
