haircut traumas in 3 year old-what to do!?

Loads of sympathy for you OP. Eldest was exactly the same. I stuck to the same barber shop cos at least that way my embarrassment was contained in the one place rather than spread all over town.
He also hated getting his toenails cut, that was a saga too. He still does and he's 28 now.
DS hates having his toenails cut! So do his elder sisters!!! I do his whilst he sleeps.0 -
DS used to be like this - we just let it grow, occasionally trimming the fringe while he was asleep, until nanny couldn't stand it anymore and booked him into her hairdressers! We went down the 'bribe with chocolate buttons' route - first couple of cuts were a little wonky and I think he probably ate more hair than chocolate, but after a couple of cuts he definitely started getting used to it, after half a dozen visits he was actually looking forward to going!
We did have one disaster though, when 'his' hairdresser was ill and someone else tried to cut it - they didn't have his usual apron or child seat either, as another little girl was using them, and I think it was too much change for him! So now it's Doug or nothing. It helps that he now cuts from home and has Sky TV in the corner (in fact he has trouble now getting him to move his head, rather than hold it still...)
He also has a massive thing about getting his nails trimmed - we did just pin him down to do them though! He'd scream blue murder - dread to think what the neighbours thought... We're just about at the stage where he will let me cut them (reluctantly) but I wish I'd thought to do what my friend does with her DD and filed them instead!0 -
Duct tape can fix anything... including a struggling kid!
Edit: Maybe I should leave this bit of the forum before I offend someone...0 -
I used to hate having my hair cut when little because I felt I was being punished, sitting on a chair for at least an hour, having to stay still, being shouted at if I moved.. Plus the haircut never looked nice to me. I still hate having my hair cut - so I cut it myself.
Both me and my son (also 3yrs) have slightly wavy hair, so I can get away with it if I make any mistake. Luckily, with practice, I d say I ve cracked it. Mistakes are more obvious on straight hair. I cut my son's hair when he is having a bath. I cut his locks off while he is playing with the ducky. He is such an active toddler, there s no way I d sit him on a chair and have a stranger approach him with scissors. Sorry.0 -

Things that have worked for my two year old have included taking him around every hairdresser in town until we found one that he was happy with - he chose a female hairdresser after getting particularly upset by the male ones. He has been ok with a mobile hairdresser coming to our house. He also has it cut at toddler group, last time he refused and kicked up a fuss, I thought he was genuinely frightened and upset until he asked for a biscuit five minutes later, I said he could have one once he'd had his hair cut and he immediately ran off to find the hairdresser!0
