haircut traumas in 3 year old-what to do!?

I found the clippers caught in my son's hair. I was probably doing it wrong but I did do it better with scissors, OH agrees that I even do it better than the barber. It's not that difficult - I find cutting dd's long hair in a straight line harder!0

I've been through this.
It was impossible to cut my son's hair as he was absolutely petrified.
I bought some clippers and did it myself (had never cut hair before!). I let him feel the clippers when they were on and bribed him with a lolly if he sat nicely. He didn't like it, but he sayt there anmyway. After the first time, he was much better. The thing is, I am the one person that he never have a tantrum on - as he know I mean business. Whether you'll be successful or not will depend on your relationship with him and whether he'd ultimately refuse to let you have a go.
He's now 10 and has kind of grown out of it - but he won't have anyone else touching his hair as he doesn't think they do it as well as me! He's still petrified of scissors. Some people just have weird reactions to stuff."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

I find that the hair needs to be wet and the clippers need to be oiled/clean."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."

i had looked at that one but the reviews are poor on it. I used to do their dads hair with clippers, blending and different grades etc so know what to do with them, just need a relatively quiet set for ds if he tolerates them0

I think it must be boys, my son was the same at 3 , he hated it and screamed and squirmed , then the hairdresser accidently nicked his ear, blood everywhere, she resigned on the spot and we never went back:eek:
Mind you hes 16 now, this year we have had red hair for comic relief, then it shaved off for a bet and now Ive just bleached it and dyed it a rather fetching shade of blue.
Im not sure which is worse, then or now?

I know he's a boy but could you get one of those head dolls with hair and let him cut it? do you know the ones I mean - its like a head and shoulders? if he sees it as a game he might be more amenable to having his own hair cut.0

Is it the cutting or the loss of his hair that bothers him?
Sounds weird but one time when my son was little he started getting upset and kept looking down at the hair on the floor. the hairdresser straight away offered to him to put it in a bag for him to take home. Smiles again. she told me it's not uncommon for kids to feel a bit weird about leaving it behind..but they are happy if it gets swept up and they take it away. She did it for lots of kids. He was always fine about me just chucking it after a day or so...could be worth a try?Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
My DS has always hated to have his hair cut, and like yours, his is very thick, curly and grows very quickly. He's just turned 9 and still hates it and will do everything to get out of it. He looks ridiculous when it grows, he even calls his hair a poodle affro, would have thought the teasing would have got to him, especially since he's started a new school in September, but no, he loves it and doesn't care what others think... he begged me to wait until Christmas, then after his birthday....finally had to accept defeat yesterday!!!
It has become easier with age, but still he gives me grief. I guess I've just accepted it over the years. At 3, it was a real battle, tears etc... At the time, I used to reward him with something really nice, nowadays, i get him a magazine that he can read whilst I use to clippers, it helps. Still, neither of us look forward to it (We're free for about 6 weeks now, yipee!!)0
