This means that if you want to use the recording agaist them at a later date, they must first be told that you are recording the call, this is when they hang up on you.
I never tell them. Questions about the admissibility of a recording are unlikely to arise. The fact of its existence is usually sufficient ...

what is up with this passive tense anyway and with "may". It is as if they want to be able to deny having any records when that suits them.

I used to work for somewhere that had this warning. The issue was that occasionally the software would go down and NOT record the call. Therefore when we wanted to use it for information or reference we didn't have it either. (Most annoying when it was an important one and you wanted to review it.)

I've also heard of some places will only record say 1 in 5 of the calls as an operator overview and its (largely) random as to which ones those will be.

So, yes, they are covering themselves by saying "may". However there are some reasons other than having an excuse not to provide a copy when asked for one.
  • Tell them when you are recording just after they give you the automated message that they are recording you that you are recording them.

They may not be listening but also you may not be listening to what they are telling you , I wonder if they would need to prove that to disclose the recording they are making of you.....

    Not advice just a ramble.

Surely if they say "calls may be recorded for training and monitoring purposes", they are giving you permission to record the calls.

Isn't that the same as saying "you may record calls for training and monitoring purposes"?

    ;)
