Ruby Wedding Gift Ideas

Options
It's my parents' ruby wedding in a month or so, and I'm looking for ideas for a really special gift for them. My brother and sister and I will be clubbing together, probably we'll come up with around £300.

My parents are already planning some kind of trip themselves, so we're really looking for an item to give them. Something commemorative rather than useful, I think. Like most retirees, they have everything they need.

Any ideas please?

  • What about some sort of portrait? Maybe a really good pencil portrait or painting perhaps of them.

A voucher for a restaurant that they would think is too expensive to go and eat there?

Thanks for both of your suggestions. I should have mentioned that they're currently living in Spain so I probably can't get a voucher for a restaurant.
  • I also really like the idea of a portrait/painting commissioned by you, for them. I'm sure you could find an artist over here who could put together a composite from various photos - say, the two of them happy and smiling sitting on a bench together in the sun, outside their villa in the garden? It would be a very personal and special present. Or, how about commissioning a special quilt, table runner (or embroidered wallhanging) for them? Something that has been made just for you is a very precious gift.

£300. Enough to take you and your siblings to Spain to share a meal with them. It could be a good idea if they don't feel they see you as often as they would like. Or how about a grandfather clock with a plaque commemorating their wedding? That would stand a good chance of becoming a family heirloom. Or how about a painting not of them but of you and your siblings?

  • Yes I see how them living abroad could make it that bit harder! Love rochja's idea too about spending the money to all go out there and see them, I bet they'd really appreciate that.

Many thanks for all of your suggestions. Unfortunately I live on the other side of the world to them so it would cost a bit more than £300 to get me there! My brother and sister go out there regularly. I'll pass on all of your ideas to my siblings and see what they think.
    Thanks again.
  • Not something that would cost a fortune, but what about a memories box. Include photos and letters from people congratulating them on their Ruby anniversary - get memories from people who were there of the wedding itself. Take (or get sibs to do so) photos of the church they married in, their first house etc.

Wow, that's a great idea, tuttifrutti. Unfortunately my parents' wedding was a spur of the moment registry office thing and somewhat controversial at the time! It's a long story, but we wouldn't be able to do that, though I hope someone else reads this and uses your idea.

Even spur of the moment and controversial then surely isn't controversial now is it?? - What I mean is, there must be people now who'd want to wish them well, and you could still take a pic of the registry office and their first home and things like that maybe. Or would it stir up a wasps nest doing so??
