router trouble

Not I being able to connect my new laptop wirelessly I contacted AOL who told me my router was not compatable with the latest technology despite me being able to access the internet with other devices . Are they obliged to send me a new router to ensure I can get online and use the service I am paying for?

No, they are responsible for getting the ADSL signal to property, not to your laptop. If your router isn't wireless then you'll need to get one that is-loads from a tenner upwards on eBay.
If it is wireless, then it should be able to connect with any wireless laptop, but don't expect AOL to provide any meaningful tech suport-you'll do better task on here.
NB: did you ask AOL for your MAC? If you do that, and are out of minimum term contract, then a new router will usually magically be offered if you say that you need to go wireless and can't afford to buy one, so you will have to leave...
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

No, AOL are not obliged to send you anything because you can still get online, as you say, with other devices.

You pay for internet access to the property down the telephone line, the point of which will stop at the master socket. I presume you had some cable running from a previous computer/laptop to the router, and if so as a temporary measure you can still plug that in and get online until you replace the router.

Easy way to tell if a router is wireless capable: Does it have a screw-on aerial on the back of it? If so, it probably needs reconfiguring to enable it. If not, you can get new routers, as previously stated, for peanuts.
