I bought a coat from new Look in September, first time i've ever spent silly money ona fashionable coat, i normally go for something practical and cheap, but as i had just found out my partener was cheating on me i needed to give myself a bit of a boost so treated myself.
5 months on and the zip has broken grrrr, so took it back today with the receipt and they won't give me my money back, they would have exchanged it for another coat but won't refund my money. I tried another jacket the same but as i zipped it up the zip was already broken, so doesn't this mean the coat is faulty??? there fault not mine.
The woman said but you've had it 5 months, my reply, after paying £35 for a coat i expect it to last me more than 5 months, so now i have a winter coat which has a broken zip and £35 out of pocket

Can't you exchange it for another one of the same look? That way you would at least get another five months.0

they don't have any winter coats in just summer ones now, which doesn't help seen as its just started snowing lol0

Impressed you had the receipt still!!!
When I buy from New Look I only expect it to last one season, you got 5 months use out of it which for £35 isn't bad. I would exchange for something else myself if thats all they are offering.WIN £2008 in 2008 £1836.31 2009 wins - £91!!! 2010 wins in Oz $ 6170.... wins 2011 aprox $2000
MFIT - number 37. Reduce my mortgage from £63,500 to £48,000. now at 54,000...0 -
find one of those ladies who do alterations, trouser bottoms, zips etc and have a new zip put in.0

The tricky part is if they argue that you have worn it every day and therefore it's normal wear and tear or possibly your usage has contributed to the fault.
Anyway, regardless they do not have to give you a refund after this amount of time.
Say it is a fault and nothing to do with normal wear and tear, even then they could offer a repair or like-for-like replacement in the first instance. Only if it couldn't be repaired (unlikely, for a zip) then you could ask for rescission of the contract, which is a partial refund taking into account the use you have had from the item. Therefore you're not likely to get much back, bearing in mind the value of the coat and the fact it's not really designed to last years and years.0 -

I don't expect it to last years and years but i do expect it to last me over winter at least, i tried one exactally the same in the shop and the zip on that one was already broken, thats why i took it as a fault.
I have a friend who said she will fix it for me,i might be tight but i've spent less than £35 on coats in the past and they have lasted me more than a year.0 -

For those of you that are interested, just to let you know i phoned New Look customer services today to complain about the quality of the coat. To my surprise the woman told me i could either take it back to the shop and get a full refund, or if i get it repaired they will pay for it :T :T
So much for listening to the woman in the shop who said if i phoned customer services nothing would be done :j :j :j0 -
But if you go back to the shop won;t they say the same thing??0

Unfortunately, 'fashion' items (even coats) are only meant to last 3 months (according to manufacturers), so if the coat's broken their attitude will be 'tough luck'. TBH you were lucky they offered you an exchange.
I don't mean to sound harsh, and I know you're upset, but that's the way shops work. The shop assistant probably told you CS wouldn't help to put you off. From experience, Having worked for New Look a few years ago, customers usually got something better by ringing CS. Try getting CS to write you a letter to take to the shop.0 -
Aren't clothes guaranteed against fault like other items? I would expect them to not be against wear and tear but not everything. The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0
