Iphone 4 contract expires soon - what next?

I have always had a company mobile so am quite inexperienced in all the contract differences and am now self employed.

Basically I went online almost 18 months ago and bought an iphone4 which cost £100 then £35.00 per month - this is due to expire soon, also I have a £6.99 insurance policy with a third party company.

Can anyone advise my best option to save costs per month with a new contract or pay as you go option, I wish to keep my existing phone an number. I only make a minimal amount of calls per day send a few texts but mainly need to check info online & view & respond to my work emails when Im out on the road.

thanks

Do you want to keep the same handset, or upgrade?

I don't see any point in upgrading.
    Sim-only deals to consider:

    giffgaff (O2) £10 = 250m+Unltd+Unltd - PAYG
    Chitter-chatter (t-mobile) £6 = 100m+100+Unltd - rolling contract min 1 month
    Talkmobile £8 = 300m+1000+500 - rolling contract min 6 months

no I have very little interest in upgrading, the phone does all I need so Im happy to keep it, for work Im trying to get my costs down as much as possible - and also if I move to sim only should I keeep my insurance or is there no point?

Strange question. You insure the handset, not the tariff. If you do need the insurance and it was provided by the network, make sure it remains valid if you switch the network. I think independent insurers don't care what network you use your phone on.
That said, personally I never buy insurance for my mobiles.

I think the regular way of unlocking an iPhone is by contacting the network it is locked to. They are likely to charge you for this: giffgaff's unlockapedia
