is my sky box dead?

hi
cant get a signal on my sky digibox,
it just stopped working saying 'no satellite signal is being recieved'
when i've looked at the signal strength its empty then all of a sudden it will show full strength for a sec then nothing again...... have checked the dish and everything is tight at that end......so could it be the box itself thats given up??
cheers

got this earlier today, was the snow that did it, sometimes it builds up on the dish or the LNB (bit that looks like a bike headlamp)

Is your dish full of snow? this will stop the signal and you will get the error, or the same if you have high winds and the dish has moved

I get that from time to time. Have to switch off & unplug the Sky box and leave it for a minute then plug it back in. Sometimes it takes 5 or six goes before it goes back to "searching for listings". Only usually happens if I have unplugged the Sky box for some reason.

I'm glad you're not my doctor! If it's still talking to you, it's not dead. :p

Connect it to a friend's dish system. If it does the same thing then it's faulty. List of repairers here:

BTW it helps if you know your make and model number.

Phone sky and threaten to cancel your subscription, when they ask you why tell them your box is broke. They will offer you an engineer visit at £60 a throw to fix it.If you tell them you cant afford it and still want to cancel they will then send you an engineer free of charge. They dont like losing customers so they will do anything to keep you, trust me,its happened to me.In the end I had 4 visits,3 new boxes and a new run of coax cable all free of charge just to fix one fault.

It could be the power supply in the box overheating - it's a common problem. Is it in a cabinet? If so it may need more ventillation. Switch it off from the mains and let it cool down.

I'm glad I read this thread yesterday , my daughter was in a panic earlier as the signal dropped while she was watching the cartoons.
I looked outside and the dish was covered in snow which I washed off with a hosepipe and the signal is now back on full strength , hopefully it won't freeze up as I don't want to have to send the missus up a ladder with a can of de-icer in these conditions.;)
  • I have had this happen when someone slightly moved the box,I looked at the aerial connection at the rear of the box and found that this was loose just reconnected and hey presto back again take a look you never know.
