Opera using 50% CPU

The past 2 nights my browsing has slowed down to a crawl around 8.30-9.00pm and has become almost unusable.

I am running Vista and the latest version of Opera. I have run Ccleaner and Mbam which found nothing. I use Avast AV. There are no scans running as I have them set to run on a Wednesday.

When I checked Task Manager it is showing Opera as using 50% CPU.

I have used Closed's tutorial to speed up a slow computer, but this isn't slow all the time. I rebooted last night just before going to bed and it was fine earlier today until about an hour ago. Everything's fine using Firefox, it's just Opera that's slow. The last update to Opera was 7 December and it's been OK until now.

Any idea what can be causing the slowness?

check for any add-ons running ?? You can roll back and install the previous version over the top of the current one without losing any of your bookmarks/settings/etc. Might be worth trying that, then if it goes well for a couple of days then re-installing the latest one :)

http://www.filehippo.com/download_opera/ and pick the version you want.

edit:- I think I had this with a previous version and did the above to clear it...

Thanks. I was just considering rolling back and am looking at the Opera forums at the moment. Seems like I'm not the only one with this problem, but can't see a solution yet. Can't believe I'm finding FF faster than Opera!

    jeez, never :D

I think what happens is, when MS release an update, it may have a knock-on effect sometimes, until either MS do another update or an update to Opera is released to get over the issue...could be wrong, but...

Well I rolled back to the previous version for a few days and all was fine. Updated to the latest version again yesterday and within minutes I was having problems with the mouse being jerky, scrolling jerky, etc so I have rolled back again and will wait until there is a new update.

The latest version was fine for about 4 weeks before it went wonky.

Any idea what could have made it go wrong, could it have been a Windows update? Although I think it started to go wrong a couple of days before the monthly Windows Updates on the 10th.
  • Can you give me a rough Idea of system specs, there are a variety of issues with Opera and it is almost impossible to diagnose without further detail.

Try pressing F12 and turn off javascript then see if your CPU Usage prob goes away.

There has been an update to Opera since I last posted, v 11.61, so I tried that and got the same problems of pages taking minutes to load or not loading at all.

Someone on another board has suggested using OpenDNS.

Can someone explain what OpenDNS does and why it would be of benefit? I don't need to block any sites.

    post a hijackthis log

I doubt a different dns server will cure it as you say it doesn't affect firefox.

dns translates a website name into a number.

Try the portable version of opera.
