Which supermarket to choose for best discount on massive circa £600 food shop?

Hi there, I'm hoping someone on here can help me. My OH's family have organised a get together in a self catering fort for 15 people for 4 nights, in memorium of my OH's late aunt.

Now to the point, obviously we're going to need quite a lot of food for so many people, which I think will cost somewhere around £600 or possibly more (any ideas?) it's difficult to estimate but I know OH's family won't want to scrimp too much as it's a special occasion, and I don't think they want anyone to have to bring anything so will have to buy store cupboard stuff too.

So I was wondering if anyone knew what would be the best supermarket with the best/most appropriate online discount code around at the moment?

I would have thought as it's such a high amount a percentage off code would be best, does anyone know of any? I don't think they're fussy about where the food comes from as long as they deliver.

Thanks in advance everyone!

    well firstly then
if you want shopping delivered to this fort
do you know which stores will deliver to that area

so which know which stores we're dealing with, then we proberly could help more easily

Agree that you need to see who will deliver there first.

The only % discount codes I ever receive are with Ocado, but there's always a cap on what you can receive, so wouldn't benefit you greatly.

I would either see who has the best offers at the time on the stuff I buy or if that sounds too much of a faff try something like mysupermarket.co.uk comparison site to see who comes out cheapest on your basket of goods.

I suspect the Tesco or Nectar points will help

I know its probably a headache but I'd recommend trying to see where you can get items at a cheaper cost- eg cheaper from one store and so on separatly rather then for one store -with some stores you can pick up a free delivery code and it can help. I know I had one for Sainsburys (save £10 on your next online spend when you spend over £50- I didn't keep it though so can't give you the code but others may have this). Tesco often do the same too.

I know Sainsburys do the Brand Match if you spend over £20 but limit this to £10, others above have sait Ocado cap any discounts, not sure where Asda or Tesco stand but 600 Tesco points would get you £6 back...

Also check for any cashback offers:
Tesco offer around £5 for a once only deal on Topcashback, Sainsburys is 50p, Asda offer nothing and Ocado offer £7.72 all on TopCashback.
Tesco offer £5 on food or 3% on wine, Asda offer £5.50 for new customers, Sainsburys offer 50p and Ocado offer £7.50 for new customers on Quidco.

You could always put your shopping list through MySupermarket too but be aware that new offers can come up without the site being fully aware.

  • Hi thanks for the responses, sorry I should have been clearer I think my OH's parents are going to get the food delivered to their house and bring it down. I didn't ask but imagine this must be because they think nowhere will deliver to the fort, its on the edge of a cliff in cornwall and accessed via a drawbridge so this is probably an accurate assumption!

So does it sound like the current £15 off when you spend £75 is the best I'll be able to find then? I'll suggest they use mysupermarket, if you do your whole basket on mysupermarket, can you then buy it through them without entering it all again on the cheapest supermarket's site if you see what I mean?

There was some mention that someone in the family has a 10% off code for tesco, I thought I'd be able to find better than this but I guess not, unless it's capped quite low. Thanks.

    That sounds FANTASTIC. I'm jealous

Yes absolutely. Make up the basket in MySupermarket, then (still in MySupermarket ) book the slot, and it will then automatically transfer your basket to the supermarket's own site for payment details.

I hope you all have a fantastic time.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

I'd definitely advise doing on my supermarket, depending on what you're buying it may be a different shop than you'd expect that is cheaper-example last weeks shop done via my supermarket was £60 in Sainsbury but would have been £140 in Ocado, £130 in Waitrose and about £105 in tesco/ASDA

You might find it worth splitting the shop then you could get what is the cheapest from each as well as being able to make the most of any discount codes/money off vouchers/price matches.

Another thing is if you have a costco or similar anywhere near and you know someone with membership, sometimes they do work out cheaper for party food/drinks bought in bulk, but do double check as this isn't always the case and other items would often be cheaper bought from a normal supermarket xx

If you do use Sainsburys, do several 'shops' as you get 'money off your next shop' vouchers at the till. I spent just over £65 last week and got a voucher for £6 off my next £40 shop.
