We stayed at the Premier Inn which was about a thirty minute walk to the town (there are buses outside the hotel). Free parking, you can eat at the restaurant next to the hotel or in Sainsburys across the road. Not exactly luxurious but very money saving.
Spend less now, work less later.
  • Thanks very much will go & have a wee look

There is a brand spanking new Travelodge right in the middle of Chester near Northgate about 100 metres outside the old Roman Walls - if it were my choice I'd stay there and spend your well earned cash on nights out, eating out, etc. I can highly recommend Moules a Go Go - http://www.moulesagogo.co.uk/- they don't do just Mussels - it's a varied menu and they do special lunchtime and early evening deals including Beat The Clock type prices and kids welcome with a seperate kids menu if required. Plenty of nice pubs - Brewery Tap on Lower Bridge Street and across the river The Ship Inn - by the old bridge. Harkers near the canal on the way to the station is excellent too. Telfords Warehouse is a 5 minute walk from the Travelodge - superb bar/restaurant overlooking the canal with live music and late license with a bit of music after the live bands - http://www.telfordswarehousechester.com/

Chester Zoo is a short bus ride away and is probably the best Zoo in the country - also Blue Planet Aquarium at Cheshire Oaks although I know people who've been say it can be over rather quickly. If walking in the outdoors is your thing then drive out to Burwardsley and walk part of the Sandstone Trail on a ridge overlooking the Cheshire Plain and finish with a fantastic pub lunch at The Pheasant Inn in Burwardsley complete with log fires and lovely beer. Book if it's Saturday or Sunday lunchtime as it can get busy - in the week you can just turn up http://www.thepheasantinn.co.uk/ reviews here http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/33/33286/Pheasant_Inn/Tattenhall

Walk the Roman walls at Leisure in 90 minutes and see the City from another aspect plus (Free) Museum, Cheshire Oaks is a bus ride away if shopping is your thing - lots of discounted Brand outlets and restaurants. However shopping in Chester is unique due to the Rows where you can shop in comfort out of the weather although some of the shops are pricey to cover high rents.

It sounds good, although it doesn't have a car park at all, let alone a free one, which is what the OP requested (it appears to direct you to a NCP one close by), so I guess it depends on how important that requirement is.

Hi I previously stayed at the Mill, right in the centre, they have a barge and you can have a cruise and evening meal, breakfast was good too.

I'm slightly biased but I'd deffo recommend the zoo...there are sometimes deals to be had but if not at least make sure you book online and save over paying at the gate. They are doing some refurbishment at the main entrance but don't let that put you off - it doesn't affect the main zoo, just the gift shop at the moment! Also if you liked the look of the bat cave, that's closed for a few weeks as they do some improvements there. Their facebook page is really good for finding out the latest (eg tiger cubs off show atm too for a short while) and if you ask them a question on there they respond really quickly
  • We visited last year and stayed just over the bored in Wales so a bit too far to recommend accomodation. However, we found it was really cheap and easy to visit Liverpool by train from Chester. We went from a station near Birkehead where they do a park and ride scheme where it is free to park and the cost of two return tickets for two people for a half hour journey was about £6.00. Very good value and an easy way to cross the Mersey.

On that subject anyone looking to visit Chester should be aware that just because a hotel has "Chester" in it's name it doesn't necessarily mean it's in Chester. The "Chester St. Davids" hotel for example is in Ewloe in Flintshire so it's not even in the same country as Chester. The other day I was driving up the Wirral and passed the "Mercure Chester North Hotel" which was more or less on the outskirts of Ellesmere Port, which at least is in Cheshire. If you're looking for a hotel in Chester then make sure you double check exactly where it is.

If you're after a hotel actually in Chester there's a Holiday Inn next to the racecourse which has a large car park which is free to guests and is only a five/ten minute walk from the City centre.

The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
