Any problems with DVD player/recorder with Freeview

Thanks for the advice. You have said that my current DVD will still record from the V Box (if it has a scart socket which I need to check). Colin_London said that it would only record a programme which I was currently watching. Which is correct? I am unlikely to record something which I am actually watching.

I knew that a DVD recorder would not record HD.

I also have a DVD player on my laptop so could use that to watch them.
Both are correct - you can record from the V box but only what the V box is tuned to - so you can make recordings from the V box whilst you are watching Freeview on the TV's own tuner.

We have a problem with our DVD Recorder but we're not sure why. It's a Samsung DVD-SH853M and it works just fine on most of the Freeview channels, but for some reason not with the BBC channels. It pixillates, sticks and jumps on pretty much everything we've tried to record and this has been going on for years.

We've upgraded the aerial and the leads and it's absolutely fine on all the other channels. A freelance engineer we trust who's managed to solve other problems in the past with various electronic bits of kit took it away to see if he could cure itbut he couldn't get it to reproduce the fault in his workshop.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this should happen and how we could sort it out? It seems a terrible waste to trash the machine but it's driving us insane!

Get some one decent in to test and fix the aerial feed.

Thanks for that Kurtis Blue. The aerial guy was great, and we don't have any problems with receiving any of the BBC channels on any of the TVs in the house (there are 4), just on playback on the the DVD recorder on BBC channels.

If it were the aerial, wouldn't that give us problems on all the TVs?

Someone once told me that in the early days of digital TVs and DVD recorders, the technology wasn't quite as reliable as it should have been. (He made the analogy of us banging the top of TVs in the 1960s when they went a bit fuzzy, which I seem to remember doing fairly frequently in the olden days.)

My query really is about whether the Samsung recorder bought several years ago is likely to have an inherent fault. For all I know, the engineer was recording on Channel 4, which is always perfect. We only realised it was a BBC problem late last year.
