Plastering stove opening

We've had a woodburner fitted within our existing chimney opening - about four inch gap all round and 12 inches above. The brickwork in the opening was cement rendered. We are now getting the room replastered but have had conflicting advice about the adviseability of plastering inside the opening - have been told it will crack and flake rapidly due to the heat.

Anyone here have any relevant experience?

Part of my flue pipe is about 3 inches from a plastered wall using conventional plaster and painted with emulsion paint. Installed about two months ago and no sign of cracking or discolouration.

    BTW heatproof plaster is expensive!!

I forgot to mention that at ceiling height the flue passes through a sheet of fire board again conventionally plastered without any problems.
  • I have plaster around mine - see photos - and after 3 months you can see the cracks in the red paint. Behind my stove I had placed heat resistant foil from b/q. I took this off the other night and no paint had flaked nor had the plaster cracked. So you could plaster, cover it up with foil during Winter or when the stove is in use, then take it off for aesthetics during the Summer.
  • Really don't like the idea of having tinfoil in the opening! Part of the pleasue of having the fire is the way it looks. werdnareklaw - seems as though your experience was different! Maybe not possible to get a definitive answer, but grateful for assistance.
