They've got one in Woolies half price.... think it's around £5.99

I got one last week and gave it to my 10 year old daughter. She's set it up and we hope to see heads poking up in the next week. she has to have spray handy to keep the compost damp.

like you I had no idea if it was value for money or not. but i thought well we can learn using the kit, figure out how it works and then later figure out a cheaper way to do it.

i supose it depends how much it produces really,if its constantly sporing then it will be good value, if its no good after the first crop then its bad value, might get one cos i love mushys.

edit:: just got one of ebay, large organic mushy kit, repeat crop 13 quid delivered
    not to shabby me thinks.

Got one from B&Q for a fiver. What an absolute nightmare. Got as far as pin-pricks of mushrooms but didn't grow beyond that. What was worse, however, was the damned thing was infested with little midges which are now all over the house (practicality of temperatures needed means it's an indoor exercise at this time of year). Suffice to say it's been thrown out...
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

I got one at the weekend for £5.99 - not from Woolies though. I havent tried it yet but the box says that it should crop about 3 or 4 time. The box is about 50cm x 30cm so large enough for quite a few mushrooms. I think a 250g box in Asda is about 60p. Each crop should hopefully contain about 1kg of mushrooms (bit of an estimate!) so, 3ish Kg in total would be about 12 asda boxes. A small saving!! As you mentioned, there will be a cheaper way. You can get the stuff in B&Q for about £3.

Easy answer, no they are not worth it, not by a long shot :)

Save your money and buy some nice organic mushrooms.

Or do the more exotic mushrooms that you have to plug into hardwood logs, they are supposed to be good.

  • I bought a pack of mushroom spore in Pound stretcher last week but was wondering whether I would be able to grow them outside (when the weather is a bit better) in a shady spot in the garden, given that the cupboard under the stairs isnt the natural environment for field mushrooms!. Anyone else done this? What can I grow them on/in?
