Hi all,

Finally come to the end of my iPhone 4 contract with O2 on 11 Jan. I don't use even close to the calls/minutes under the contract and would dearly like to reduce my £40/month. Considerations are:

- I would like to move away from O2
- I would like to keep my number
- I need at least 500 MB data, 100 minutes, 50 texts per month
- No interest in iPhone 4S, but when iPhone 5 comes out I would like the flexibility to get it (very likely by getting an unlocked one from Apple)
- I don't want Giffgaff

One offer which interested me was Tesco Mobile's 3 month contract at £12.50 per month.

One thing I am worried about is unlocking, which I don't really understand or whether I will need it. My iPhone 4 is a replacement which I got from the Apple Store in Covent Garden when the one O2 gave me went wrong.

Many thanks for any thoughts!

PS all of the above I have been considering re getting a SIM-only offer when my contract runs out, but there is another strategy would be interested to hear it.

  • - I would like to move away from O2 --- Any reasons why? This will help with deciding which other supplier is best in what O2 is not doing for you at the moment.
    - I would like to keep my number. This will be no problem in any case
    - I need at least 500 MB data, 100 minutes, 50 texts per month -- I think T Mobile do a 'good' cheap sim only plan
    - I don't want Giffgaff ok

One thing I am worried about is unlocking, which I don't really understand or whether I will need it. I believe if you buy the phone new from Apple it will be unlocked and you can use it with any sim/supplier you like. Otherwise to unlock you will need to 'jailbreak' it which is not really straight forward if you are not a little 'techy' and most importantly it will 1* invalidate your Apple warranty 2* may become a brick if not jailbroken correctly

O2 unlock your phone for free when you finish your contract, you must call them though

    No need to call O2.

As you are on a monthly contract at present, they will unlock free of charge by filling in the form at the link below.

    https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset%20Unlocking%20Form

This does not apply to the iPhone 4S or the 8GB iPhone 4, but from what you describe, you will have a 16 or 32GB iPhone 4 if you are near the end of your contract.

You do NOT need to wait for your contract to expire. You could do this from day 1 of the contract term on O2.

Why pay £12.50 when 100+100+Unltd/500 is available for £6 at chitter-chatter (t-mobile) on 1 month rolling contract?
