Changing car tax help please
A few months ago my car tax was changed from regular to disabled so that I could run my Mum around to do shopping and such things.
Sadly she died around 2 weeks ago and to be honest this was the last thing on my mind.
I tried ordering a new tax disc online but it was saying my 11 digit number was wrong. I've just found another V5 with another number on which worked but as I was going along it was essentially asking if I wanted another disabled disc.
With me having a new V5 doc is it possible I've filled in my old one and sent it off to change the tax to disabled? Seeing as I can't do it online can I go to a post office and just get a normal disc or do I have to send the V5 off to reclass it as normal?
Thanks

It might involve completing a form V70 as you are reverting back to the normal tax rates but I am not 100% sure on that.

You need to get the taxation class changed back to PLG. The best way to do this and tax it is at your local DVLA office. Failing that you'll have to send off the V5 with change of taxation class to PLG then wait for it to come back.
Quite why you changed to disabled is beyond me as that is for when the car is solely used for the purposes of the disabled person so if you were using it to do journeys for yourself, you were fraudulently using the disabled tax disc. You didn't need to change it just to run your mum around - the tax disc on the car makes no difference in this matter even if she uses a blue badge. They check on the blue badge, not if the tax disc says disabled.0 -
I'm not sure why she did it really, I thought you could get disabled tax on a car as long as that car was used for a disabled person not that it couldn't be used for anything else. She didn't get the blue badge until she got me the tax disc so I thought they came together.
I'm hoping I can get it done by post as my nearest office I think is 45miles away. Best Wins:

The car has to be used either by, or on behalf of, the disabled person. Eligibility for a disabled tax disc usually means automatic eligibility for a blue badge (but you have to apply for it). You can get a blue badge without getting the tax disc.
As Notmyrealname says you have to either apply by post or visit your local DVLA centre to have it reclassed. You cannot do it via the post office or online. The online service is only programmed for repeat renewals and not for changes of circumstances.
Basically, the disabled tax disc is now invalid and you need to be wary of using the car until you have the new tax disc.0 -
Sorry to hear of the loss of your mum.
When does the tax run out? You might have to store it off road & declare SORN while you get this sorted
Give DVLA a ring on Monday if possible 0300 790 6802 or 01792 7823410 -
Okay, well I think I can do it via posting the V5 then like my Mum must have done to get the disabled tax. I'll probably have to ring them on Monday morning as I'm not sure what to fill in:dance: Best Wins:

When I tried to tax it online it said it doesn't run out until April but I know it makes no odds as it's still not right to drive the car with that anymore but I need it to get to work:dance: Best Wins:

If it's taxed till April, talk to DVLA about reclassifying back to PLG, by sending them the V5 in post and ask if they see a problem in you driving it in the meantime.0
