Furminator

Hi all, we're about to get our second kitten who is 11 weeks old and has really long hair! i've been recommended the Furminator as a good brush but the kitten one is hard to find and is £24 pounds at pets at home! i've found the adult long hair cat one for £8 online so i'll be getting that but i'm wondering if paying out for the kitten one is worth it.

I've also been recommended the zoom groom as a back up in the mean time which are around £4

any opinions, hints or tips for long haired kittens/cats? thanks all :)

Not sure about the furminator, but just to say that I wouldn't use a zoom groom on a long haired animal as it tends to pull rather than brush through it. My Yorkie hated it so much, but when it was used on a friend's Lab she loved it.....so I think they are probably getter for sleek haired critters (in my experience) :)

I used it on my long haired German Shepherd but stopped, it pulled/cut the hair...

I use a Furminator on my shepherd, and it works a treat (sorry gettingready :D) , however cat fur is different, and I would stick to a simple wire slicker brush. I have a very long-haired Maine Coone and she actually grooms herself, I only need to help out when she's moulting and she has the odd tiny tangle behind her ears.
  • i have also just bought a new persian kitten who is due to join us next week.
i was looking online for a new brush and someone said don,t use a ferminator on a persian because it will ruin his fur.
i don,t know if that is just someones opinion or if it is true.
i just thought i,d let you know as you also have a long fured kitten.

Go for the adult one, it will be adult soon enough ;)

We use one on our two boys, Ollie is semi long haired and Charlie is a British Blue x but its not something we use regular, maybe once a month because its one harsh little brush! I would recommend a bristle brush for daily/ weekly brushes and a ferminator for once a month. They are sharp so just go REALLY easy until you and the cat get used to it :T

i love this picture, they look in perfect prime condition and i love the grass background.. they look like they are wild cats in a wilderness prairie.
the blue cat looks like a full pedigree and the black and white one looks just like sylvester off the tweety and sylvester cartoons
  • sorry i did not mean sylvester ,i meant that girl cat off the pepe le peu cartoon.
where the skunk thinks the cat is also a skunk.
  • I agree, go for the adult one. I have two adult cats and now a young adult cat. I swear none of mine shed all that much fur as kittens anyway (maybe mine are odd) but it seems like a waste of money if you bought a kitten brush. Besides, I don't understand how a kitten brush could be different in make up from cat brush, just a way to get you to buy more stuff... like with male and female bic razors... I swear the difference between the two is pink handle (ladies) or yellow handle (gents), oh, and of course the price.

thanks all :) i will be getting the adult brush but they seem to do one for short hair and hair over 2 inches long :S so i guess i'll wait til we get her and work out the hair length haha. In the mean time has anyone got any links for a normal brush I can get? there seems to be so many varying prices, styles and makes that i'm not entirely sure what to go for!
