Tiling over tiles?

In the last 5 years we have moved twice and found on both occasions that both the bathrooms and kitchens and been tiled twice one on top of the other and both times really badly. We had to take all the tiles off as you cannot put a 3rd tile on. This is particularly difficult when you have the whole room tiled from floor to ceiling. So please think twice before you do it as if you want to change the tiles again or you move someone has to take them all off and start again from scratch.0

I completely agree. Why can't people just do things properly? Everything in our current house was done like this. Tiles over tiles, and paper over paper over more paper.
If ever you decide you don't want tiles there then getting two lots off will be an absolute nightmare. Surely it would just be best to take the tiles off and skim over any areas that are damaged.0 -
Do not use PVA!!!!
PVA is a big NO in tiling
Why do you say that, care to explain instead of just saying do not use ??

The reason is that pva breaks down with water, so your tiles have a good chance of falling off the walls.0

I am a tiler and it I can tell you from experience that tiling over old tiles is not a problem. Even if there are already 2 layers on the wall. If the walls are plasterboard then I would not recomend taking the tiles off as this will rip the boards to bits no matter how carefull you are, it also leaves old adhesive on the walls which is a real pain to scrape off. If you need to patch areas where there currently no tiles then just use Wickes white tiles and then tile over the top. I agree with Madstuthe1st, that you should not pva the walls. this creates a barrier between the adhesive and the old tiles. If any condensation from the bath/shower or sink gets through the grout it will cause the tiles to fall off. As for trims, you can buy special deep trims that can quite comfortably fit 2 tiles or use floor tile trims if you need to cover 3 layers of tiles.
