Tiling over tiles?

Onto my next project (done the lights, thanks to those who helped).

In the bathroom I have old tiles, painted over not very well by the previous owners. Trouble is, these tiles are fixed to plasterboard, so pulling them off risks pulling chunks out of the plasterboard too.

So, as long as I prepare the area (get all the old silicone out from round the bath etc), would I be ok to just tile straight over the tiles? Then get some cheap tiles to fill out the area's I want to tile more of, and again, tile over the cheap tiles?

Are there any specific cons to this? Say for instance getting the bath out if it's ever needed?

Also, is there any cornering for tiles (that round edge stuff) which allows for double tiles?

Cheers Guys

i just did this in my kitchen, they were awful, and wonky, but solid onto the wall, so we put the grout on them, then fixed the tiles, and it looks brilliant :) make sure u invest in a decent motorised tile cutter though!
  • You can definitely tile over tiles, but as for the best way to do it, you'll have to wait for someone else to reply, or just have a google on it and see what you get.

I want an answer for the plastic corner trim too - thinking over tiling over my kitchen tiles, but the trim is the problem, so thanks for beating me to that question and I'll wait for the replies too!

Definitely worth investing in the electric cutter IMO though. I've used the basic cutters before and they are good, but only really for straight lines.

    Good Luck!
  • I can't say I've heard of trim that covers 2 tiles. Can't you just replace the plasterboard? Thats what I did in my old house, it could work out cheaper than buying the cheap tiles which you'll never see.

i did it in the bathroo, no probs though probably used more grout than would normaly.

i would drill a few holes between the grout then fix a plank of wood level to the wall at the bottom, it prevents any slipage down the wall.

then tile across the wall. that means by the time you come to the next level the lower tiles have settled a bit and stuck. i also did it in sections so that i had done a maximum of three tiles high at any point meaning not only did i get to come back to it the next day but knew the lower tiles had set, were level and the only thing i had to worry about was the spacing and amount of grout to keep them all level at the wall.

Thanks all, guess it just leaves the cornering, I'll have to go hunting!
  • Let me know if you find any to fit, Graham!

    Thanks! :)

We tiled over shower tiles no probs. It's usually a more even surface than the wall.

  • just make sure that you clean the old tiles first and then slap on a coat of diluted PVA, then the new tiles will stay on for ever.
  • Do not use PVA!!!!

PVA is a big NO in tiling
