was never happy with the results.

otherwise i always remove the old ones first.
    Get some gorm.
  • Ive done it and they were fine, but as someone else said stagger the joints if the tiles are the same size as old ones.

If rented two houses that had both had tiles other tiles and both times they've fallen off. If a jobs worth doing its worth doing properly.
  • For me personally I hate tiles over tiles. My bathroom was like it from the previous owner, then upstairs flat (just us downstairs & 1 flat upstairs) flooded his kitchen which lead to of course water having to go somewhere and somewhere happened to be my bathroom. Massive leak as the water had built up and up until it started to pop 2 lots of tiles off the walls, it managed to soak through chipboard (stench pipe boxing in it started at 1st) then the plaster and then the 2 sets of tiles.

Total nightmare as my whole bathroom has to be stripped down completely and be totally re done with new plaster boards etc. Even then I had to have a bathroom with a dehumidifer in for 3 weeks with no plaster boards up as the water had soaked the beams as well.

People do amazing things as I then discovered I couldn't have my power shower re connected as they had powdered it by having a cable run through the bathroom/kitchen wall and it was running off the cooker fuse, no wonder the cooker fuse always tripped when I had oven & grill on.

My kitchen has 2 sets of tiles on as well and I cannot wait to afford to have my kitchen re done and only have 1 set of tiles on. Though I wonder what other hidden things the previous owner did.

  • Hi, Its is possible to tile over tiles!
I have been tiling for 17 years now, and as long as the existing tiles are stuck fast then there should not be a problem.
I always prepare a paste/paint to cover over the old tiles first, 1 large handful of rapid set tile adhesive, approx 1 mug of PVA, plus 1 mug of water, stir it up and paint it over the old tiles, (mix as much as you need to cover the area being tiled)
When this dries it will leave a texture like sand paper on the wall, it will bond extremely well to the old tiles (as long as you cleaned them first!!) and will leave a perfect finish for new tiles/adhesive to stick to!
I started life as tiler in Tenerife and this happed alot there! in the 8 years there i NEVER had any come back from tiling like this!
    Good look !

Hi lee - sorry but thats not the best advice. a lot of the new adhesives are polymer modified and react with PVA, plus theres really no gain to pva'ing a surface like tiles as theres nothing to seal.

I think he's suggesting PVA in his priming mix as a binder rather than anything else but I agree with you that PVA should not be used on its own as a primer for tiling in any circumstances.

hi keystone, i can see that now i had missed that. looks like a slurry coat sort of idea, but can you see any benefit in it?

Nope but then again I wouldn't know unless I tried it not that I have the inclination so to do right at the minute. Things is different in the Canaries of course. LoL.

It also means that you end up with a much smaller bathroom if you keep doing it...
