Gift list or money?

We asked for money, its a lot more common these days cant say anyone thought it was odd as long as you say what you want it for (in our case we wanted a new kitchen). As emz118 did we put on the invite:
Gifts – If you were thinking of giving us a gift, to help us on our way. A gift of cash towards our house would really make our day. Because at first we lived in sin, we've got the sheets and a rubbish bin, a gift from you would be great, but we'd prefer a donation to seal our fate.[FONT="]

Interesting topic!
We haven't mentioned gifts in our invitations, which are going out in a few weeks. We decided against a gift list – we live together, but in furnished rented accommodation, so don't actually have a lot of our own household things. As we're not quite in a position yet to buy our own place and kit it out, we decided to suggest vouchers instead, for when we can. We put a note about gifts on our wedding website, which reads:
"Our main priority for the day is to celebrate with the people most important to us. In fact, we can't wait! We also know how expensive it can be to attend a wedding. In other words, your presence, not your presents, is what matters to us.
"However, if anyone does want to buy us a little something, we hope it's not too cheeky to suggest John Lewis gift vouchers. When the time comes to feather our nest, we would put them towards something special, to remind us of our special day with our fabulous family and friends. But the main thing is that you can simply be there to help us celebrate – with your dancing shoes of course!"0 -
MsShopper... I think someone else mentioned about vouchers not being particularly secure at the moment, with businesses going bust at the moment... just something to think about.
That's why we decided not to go for vouchers.First date 10.2.2002

Thanks emz118. It's a good point, and me and H2B pondered over that at length.
JL seems like a solid choice, however - plus we are likely to get cash from a lot of our guests anyway. My side is Irish, and it doesn't seem to matter what couples have as a gift list, they get money! We just felt a bit uncomfortable actually asking for cash. (Not judging anyone - just a personal preference.)0
