Going to a photographer, is a good plan. There is in fact no reason not to take the photo yourself. The get them printed from some one like photo box, but some skill with a camera and photoshop to edit and crop is a good idea.

However don't waste £8 on the check and send. They have no special status if they say it's ok in the PO the passport people can still reject it. Get the best photo you can, include a note about the issue with the application.

The bottom line is you don't have to be able to look directly at a camera to get a passport that would be discrimination. Call the passport office and ask.

If you havent done then yet , you would be fine in a booth with his glasses off.

There is no reason for anyoone to have their photos taken with glasses on as they are removable so it is irelevant.

Dont pay the PostOffice for check and send. The passport office will decide if pics are ok whatever the Postoffice says

If you go to a photographer and the photos are rejected by the passport office the photographer should redo them free of charge. It happened to me once. Have a look in shopping malls for places that do them, Supersnap type places do and it's not much more money than a booth.

Archergirl is spot on - don't go to a photo booth (£5.00 by us for 4 identical pics) but go somewhere like Max Spielman - we just paid £5.99 for 8 pics with a guarantee if they were rejected by the passport office (for any reason) that they would re-take FOC.

Photo booths also offer a moneyback gtee. If they are rejected by the passport office or you are not happy with them for any reason.

They should be ok though as the software on most booths will not allow you to print the photo unless it meets the right conditions

The best way to get compliant passport photographs is just to take the glasses off.

Passport photographs are all about your uncovered facial appearance.

The bit about eyes being centred is to ensure that you send a front facial picture and not one where you are facing to one side slightly.

This website demonstrates the rights and wrongs quite well:

Some photographers don't charge much more than you pay in the booths - get him to take his glasses off and as long as there is no red eye, on the photo you should be ok - please put a note in sect 8 on the form explaining the problem
    Titch :)
  • I wear glasses but had to leave them off for the passport pic, I set up everything in the booth with my glasses on then took them off before I pressed the button. At the border I have been asked to take them off to check with the passport, and they have to come off for the automatic passport booth too.

Funny thing is I never had problems before with passport pics with my glasses on, never had problems with reflections or anything, I think the problem would come if the frames were very thick, or possibly if the lenses are thick enough to obscure the eyes in a picture (as may be the case in this case).

Might also be worth enclosing a note with the application stating the reason for the eyes not being centred - if he can't do it then there is not a lot you can do!

Also, looking on the website, there is a contact form that might be worth trying

Thanks for the replys we had is pic's redone by a photographer a lot better then the photo booths ones we took and should be fine, taking to the photographer the eyes centred is to do with the biometric screening that a lot of places now use,, the supermarket photo booth ones would have been rejected he reckons as you cannot see his eye's clearly enough probably due to the poor lighting which enhanced his squint. i will make a note on the form to explain, hopefully it should be sorted as it must be a common enough issue

Were you told by someone in the NHS it was classed as cosmentic only my opinion but it can also be classed as medical as it could lead to psycological problems, might be worth asking your gP or opy person. Your right about the girls, thing, I just wondered whether he had any pressure/ie bullying by his peers, kids can be cruel, mine when through a stage where they were picked on because of their glasses.

The optician told me it would be classes as cosmetic about 12 months ago, DS asked about the lazer treatment adverts he had seen on the telly, he's never had an issue with other kids, other then when he was very small a lad got upset because he had mr men glasses and he wanted some aswell :D only problem we see is he is in the ATC and would love to join the RAF but as it stands at the moment he wouldn't pass the medical (altho he's the best shot on the range) but alls not lost he's young enough that maybe corrective surgery may be possible in the future
