I don't know what a 'normal' amount of entries is compared to one with automated entries but I have had 3 competitions I entered tell me the number of entrants. One was 8000 for 3 TVs and I won one of those. I won an observer comp today for a sofa and was informed there were 14,000 entries. I got rang about, but didn't win, a mobility scooter, and the man that rang me as part of the selection process told me they had 100,000+ entries. He did go on to say that they phoned entrants to check they would actually use the prize rather than sell it before they went on to do the final selection. Very gratifying to hear but wow at the number of entries. I did get the impression they were pretty good at weeding out inappropriate entries. Granted he did go on to market their products to me, if I didn't win, but as it is something I could genuinely use I really didn't mind that.
