Would you just drive off...
This morning I have witnessed two people crash , damage property and cars and then just get back in and drive off.....
The road I live in is a busy approach road to a school although only busy at school time, and was not gritted last night .. (idiots did it at 7am) I heard but did not see the crashes , one a lady slid into a neighbours wall on the corner and when she reversed out the wall collapsed into the garden.. SHE DROVE OFF... then another crash and a gentleman in a large jeepy thing, had slid onto the pavement and ended up against a tree and car parked on the road.. he damaged the car reversing off the pavement and HE THEN DROVE OFF... this time I wrote down his number.... I intend giving the number to the lady who lives in the house where the car was damaged ...
I feel like I am being a busybody twitching my curtains , but if it was my car I would be so angry.... would you do the same?

Seconded. And leaving the scene of an accident/not providing details is an offence in itself.

Yes I would have done the same,
I always think if I was in that situation I would hope someone would have the information which would help me.0 -
I have on the 2 occasions I have witnessed accidents however unfortunately in both cases the non-fault party was insured through one of our brands and therefore I wasnt much of an "independent" witnessAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

What's the betting that they're uninsured and hoping no-one saw them?
One night I saw a car go into the back of a van when the van slammed on its brakes as it saw my car parked in a layby, and they both just drove on. Since it was chucking out time at the pub, I'm guessing they were both drunk and thought it was a cop waiting to pounce.0 -
You did the right thing. I would do the same. I've had my car damaged and no-one was ever found. It's so maddening.
I've reported someone for having tyres so bald that you could see the canvas through them!0 -
I have found since ABS brakes were introduced its virtually impossible to stop in snow or ice can be a real nightmare!0

This example is not uncommon,
The van driver didn't care, because
1. It's a van
2. It's not his problem anyway
3. The damage probably wasn't too bad
The car driver didn't care, because
1. It was his fault
2. It's too much hassle
It's happened to me once or twice (as a car driver at fault) I knocked the rear step of a van , the driver and I just gestured to each other (me saying sorry and him saying "it's ok"). I have also been hit by numerous cars and vans (me not at fault) where I have inspected the damage and told the other person to forget it.0 -
True, my friend's Transit had numerous dents by the time he bought it, and it had a few more after his neighbour wrote off her Volvo by driving into it

For the OP story,
Yes you did the right thing taking the reg plate, I did a similar thing ages & ages ago, and the person was able to make a full claim for repairs against the car I noted down. (They admitted it - or to be more precise said they didn't notice (lie) but admitted it was possible and the marks on their car proved it).
A pity you didn't get the wall bashers number, is it a busy road? i.e. no chance of seeing the car again?0
