Tenant has broken the bath

Had a call from my tenants today. Somehow (didn't go into details) one of them has "fallen over" and cracked the bath.
Firstly, is this something I could claim for on my buildings insurance? The tenancy is an unfurnished house, so I haven't got contents insurance but I'm not sure whther a bath would count as a content or part of the building itself.
If its not covered, then should I expect the tenants to pay nothing, some of the cost or all of the cost to replace the bath? They've rented the house for about 5 years now, so its not like they are a short-term let.
What I'm worried about is that replacing the bath (which is a beige colour) by itself will be tricky due to colour match. It may be cheaper to buy a plain white suite and replace the bath, sink and toilet, but obviously the fitting costs will go up then plus things like pipework may need adjusting/replacing and tiling may need to be redone to line up with new items.
Any advice?

It's likely covered by your buildings insurance, hence there'll be nothing for the tenant's to pay - at least they told you, it's good to have tenants that talk.0

That's good news. At least I won't sound like a complete buffoon if I ring them tomorrow!
I think he had to tell me.Apparantly the crack is big enough for water to leak out. But we do have a reasonable business relationship.0 -
You'd probably need accidental damage cover, otherwise I expect you're only covered for more major stuff like fire and flood and what not.0

Hi,
dig out your policy and have a read of that.
Edit: your tenants should have their own insurance, so get that checked as well.0 -
If they're good tenants, then if your insurance won't pay out, I'd be tempted to foot the bill yourself. It's not like they did it deliberately...Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
You did tell the insurer that the property was being let to tenants I suppose?
Is this a proper commercial letting with a deposit?
Either way You should seek to get a quote to do (a) what needs doing and (b) what you want to do with the full suite. Discuss it with the tenants/ insurer. If its excluded from the insurance try to negotiate with the tenants for them to pay a proportion of (a) even if you agree that (b) is what will be done. I think its reasonable that they contribute to damage they have done but it depends how you feel about it.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
How easy or difficult is it to "fall over and crack the bath?" I've never heard of such a thing.0

also most insurance companies will only pay to replace the damaged item - not the set. My beloved fell through our shower tray which was a delightful shade of 1980's pink but they would only replace that not the entire suite to match
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!0 -

You have now! :rotfl:The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
