When I get a telesales call I state that my number is ex-directory and ask where they got my number from. 9 times out of 10 they apologise and say they will remove my name from their records.
Going ex-directory will help stop firms looking up your name and number and will eventually help reduce the calls, but registering with TPS means if they call from the UK they are breaking the law. When you answer the phone find out who they are and where they are FIRST then tell them your are registered with the TPS and they are breaking the law and to remove your number from their database and never call again. If they do, tell them again & report them. But note, official goverment approved research organisations are allowed to call, but you don't have to answer their questions and you can tell them not to call again.
If they are calling from abroad, not much you can do except hang up, mess them about, put the phone next to the TV/radio for a few minutes etc. whatever turns you on at the time
