Leaving University & benefit claims?

When should a full time student apply for benefits?

When they have finished their last semester or a week or two before because they know the date they will finish?

TIA. ;)

    Im sorry...what?

Did i hear you right?---you're finishing uni and you want to know what benefits to claim while you look for employment? or??

If you dont mind breaking it down abit for anyone who is/has been in your situation to help.

With the short version that you have there, someone might think the worst.

    All the best.
  • I think the OP means how soon can she claim JSA after leaving uni.

I beleive she means she wants to claim this until she becomes employed.

But why is that the automatic assumption?

When I left Uni I looked for a job, as did all the people I studied with. We went to uni to get jobs. Its very depressing to think that someone would still be at uni and be thinking about benefits before they have even graduated.

If you're talking about when you finish uni in the summer, then it all depends on the university's official term end date. The jobcentre have a database of all official end dates and you can only claim after that date.

Probably stems from the fact that the job situation for everyone including graduates is depressing.

I have absolutely no problem with people claiming their lawful entitlement.
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
  • In an ideal world, yes, everyone would leave university and walk straight into a job. However, given the fact that thousands of graduates leave at the same time each year and are all looking for work at the same time, combined with the state of the job market at present, the reality is that it does take most people time to find a job when they leave uni. Plus, many graduate schemes and other employers want uni-leavers to actually have finished their degree and have their results in their hand before they will make a job offer.

Even seven years ago when I graduated, I was on JSA for four months until I found a job - even then, it was only a £12k a year job that I didn't need my degree for. That's just the way things are for most people unless they study further or get a lucky break.

From what I can remember, I think I made my claim after my course had ended. I think you have to provide evidence of your course end date and that's when your claim will commence. Things might have changed though so best to check with Job Centre/DWP directly.

    Good luck :)
