Confused by the options

Hello,

My partner and I have decided to split up, with my partner moving out in the next couple of weeks. At the moment, our broadband is provided by his work through BT, so obviously this will go. Apparently they plan to keep the line active (at his request as he may occassionaly wish to work from the house) but he will be taking the router with him and I am obviously not allowed to use the access.

So, I need to get my own broadband installed. I only need broadband, not a landline (though I assume this isn't possible as I'll need the line rental anyway, for the access right?). I have no idea how many megabites/giggabites I'll use though. I mostly just use the net for information, facebook and some shopping. I do occasionally watch things like iplayer, thought not much (less than once a month). Having said that, I'll be living on my own for the forseeable so my downloading of music/video watching activity is likely to increase I should think.

Also, we aim to eventually sell the house, and I'll be moving into rented when that happens. My partner has agreed to consider this in 6 months, but he won't agree to sell before then, so I'm anxious about signing up to a 12 month contract when I (hopefully) won't be here that long.

Would I be better off with a dongle or something like that, or would it be better to get the wi-fi and risk paying a cancellation fee in a few months? I've heard dongle's can be pretty expensive!

Any thoughts on usage limits, contract and delivery method (provider or dongle) would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Hoping to create a beautiful life for DS and I.

From the sound of it there will be a live BB line active at your house. I cant see how you can set up another one without getting a new line installed. Personally I would tell him to sod off if he thinks he can keep the line active at your place but forbid you from using it as this stops you from accessing BB yourself.

You can get 30 day BB contracts, but it's more expensive. Much better for him to open a new account at the new location.

Would it cost a lot more to get a new line installed then? Perhaps the dongle is the best route if that's the case.

I'm trying hard to keep things amicable at the moment, which we're mostly succeeding with. I don't really want to cause a row over something like broadband - there will be much bigger fish to fry in the future.

You could pick up a cheap router, plug it in and use the existing service (assuming the free BB your ex has doesnt use a 'special' router). When you know he is coming over just unplug it and put it in a cupboard.
