Internet vs 3G

Hello :) I will soon be moving house to an area that (mostly) has 3G on my iPhone. My question really is whether it's worth paying out for internet or just using my phone to browse and using the extra money to pay off debts for the time being. I work full time and have a young son so I would only use it for a few hours in the evening anyway but I know I will probably miss it!

depend on what you do with it any iplayer and the like will eat the data allowance , but emails and the like should be ok

If all you do is browse then this will be fine (3g signal permitting). I live in a small city and always use my Blackberry to browse the net. 3g with O2 is always very responsive for browsing mobile internet where I am. I am on a unlimited data plan as this is a work mobile.

if you don't do anything data intensive (eg only do web browsing and email) then just using 3G will be fine, if you want to watch iPlayer or something data intensive you can always use a free wifi hotspot, buy a mcflurry or coffee or something.

the iphone has a data counter built in (settings>general>usage) which you can reset on the start of your bill and can check so you don't go over your limit and get charged.
  • I would look at Plusnet Value broadband and their phone line rental for a bit under £13 per month all in.

There is limited data with this but you can set it to slow down when you have used your included data rather than charge you for more.

Can you change your phone contract to make a saving towards the cost of the broadband over a phone line?

Are you considering tethering a computer to your iPhone or just using the iPhone ?

If you are thinking of using the computer to access the Internet via the iPhone you can end up with a nasty surprise as this can use loads of data.

At least with Plusnet you can control your cost.
  • its all depend on your location....if you are in 3g completable area and you got a high bandwidth signal then you enjoy superior 3g services......

I was forced to do this - when I moved to a new job in London I had to start staying in a squat there Monday-Friday with no landlines and no reasonable way to instal them. So I had to do all my surfing on the iPhone (and later on the Android). It was really frustrating to start with, particularly because the 3G network seemed to be so overloaded at peak times in central London that I couldn't watch YouTube videos or anything like that.

But after a rough transition period, I'm now competely used to it and don't find it to be an issue at all. Save the money!
