Lidl: faulty microwave - what are my rights?

Firstly ... HAPPY NEW YEAR to one and all!!!

Secondly: I need help getting my head around what EXACTLY are my rights regarding a problem with a faulty microwave. Let me explain the situation so far:

I bought a microwave from Lidl 18 months ago. Yesterday, it stopped heating up what was put in it - it appeared to be doing what it is designed for but, when I took out the food, it was cold. I rang Lidl Customer Services, and was told that I would need to contact their service operator who would either repair it or provide a replacement. What I want to know is:
  • Do I have to accept this, or can I ask for my money back as I am disappointed that it only lasted 18 months?;
  • If I have to accept this, what would be considered a 'reasonable time' for repair or replacement as I will be without a microwave;
  • If they cannot repair, or replace it with a similar microwave, am I entitled to a full refund as 18 months is certainly not a reasonable time in which an item such as a microwave - that is only used 2-3 times a week - to break down.
I would be so grateful if someone can come to my aid with this.

    Your rights - first of all how long a guarantee is there on it, normally there is a 12 month cover.

    If this is the case then your actual rights (because yours is out of guarantee) are that you would have to have an independant report (at your cost) and if its found to have an inherent fault then it is your right to have a repair, replacement or refund at the discretion of the retailer. And the report cost would be refunded. If it has just broken, then you have no rights whatsover and your stand the report cost.

    If it has a 2 year guarantee you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund which ever the retailer decides.
    Bear in mind that you wouldnt get a full refund becaus you have had use of the machine for 18 months)

    To be honest, microwaves are available for less than £30 these days, unless yours was an expensive one, you have to ask yourself if its worth the hassle. The report would probably cost you that
    make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
    and we will never, ever return.

    Assuming the thing is deemed to be inherently faulty, then the retailer has to offer a remedy.
    That remedy could be a repair, refund or replacement.
    Any refund can be a partial refund to take account of the use you have already had from it.

    Any remedy must not cause you significant inconvenience.
  • Also bear in mind that if you do go down the route of getting yourself an independent report then it will almost certainly cost more than a replacement microwave. It's a case of your rights vs hassle!

    Our microwaves done exactly the same, however I'm stuck without a receipt so it looks like we're buying a new one!
