"Are you waiting to hear back from any previous interviews?"

  • Personally i would always say yes (espesically if it's to an employer during an interview, i would also tell them that i have a second interview and that i have already turned positions down because then IMHO it shows that you are commited to the job move and process

If it was to an agency, they might try and get further details from you under the guise that they need to know they arn't putting you through to any jobs that you have already apply for.. don't give them information for the reason others has stated above

As a professional I always answer this honestly....main reason is you do not want to be put forward again by same agent, often there is no hidden agenda, they simply need to know where you are at, before they waste another employers time - given most professional head hunters might only put forward a small no of candidates too.
  • why not?....
Because if someone told me they had another interview to hear back from I wouldn't feel too bad if I turned them down. I'd never tell anyone I had loads of stuff lined up, but that's just me. You could be lying anyway.

and as others have said; if they told you they had nothing else lined up... you wouldn't be in a hurry to offer them the job.

I do think if they want you , they want you and if not you wont get it.

If the employer wants you for the job, then it will not put them off if you have been interviewing elsewhere. No employer in their right mind would decide not to offer on that basis! If anything it will make you look more attractive as someone else is interested in you. I would answer the question honestly (to a potential employer) as you may come a cropper if you do have other interviews but you said you didn't and they then offer you a job which you want them to hold as you are waiting to hear back from someone else etc. For agencies I will say I am interviewing for xxx role in xxx sort of company but stop short of naming the company, saying I've been asked to keep it confidential.

never tell an agency if you are using other agencies or have other jobs on the go, they use this info to get leads

I found this out the hard way, had 2nd interview for a job, went well, basically had it in the bag. Through using agencies I happened to mention the situation to another agency. They then contacted my prospective employer armed with their new info, bombarded them with CVs, leading to another candidate being selected. They usually say its so 'they dont send you for jobs you have already been sent for by other agencies' etc.. which is utter tripe

A friend who formally worked in recruitment said this is a common technique used in agencies to find other placements to earn from

Doesn't matter if you are put forward twice, companies deal with many agencies and will get duplicate CV's. An agency may say they will submit your CV to the client and then don't if they come up with better candidates for the role

Totally despicable and the agent who did this is pure evil scum, never ever tell agencies of your outstanding applications or interviews lined up as they will try and take your potential job opportunity away from you.

Agency is agency, whether its estate or recruitment or other, the bottom line is they are after their comission, they dont really care how they get it, and they certainly dont really 'care' about their customer
